Candy Box, presented by Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES is an eclectic gathering of performances, workshops and public showings with some of Janczewski’s favorite dance makers, alongside ARENA’s full-evening work, Picturing That Day.

"With ARENA’s 20-year history, I feel it is my duty to commit myself to developing and sharing the immense talent of the Twin Cities dance community. Making dance is a great labor of love. Sharing the work of other artists with ARENA audiences, extends the support of the dance community to the next generation of talented dance makers and connects us all. During ARENA’s ARTshare residency, ARENA is proud to present the works of SuperGroup, and Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company." Mathew Janczewski, ARENA Dances artistic director.

ARENA DANCES will perform Picturing That Day, an unassuming quintet that is a sensory experience inspired by cruise ship entertainment, with artwork of Jim Hodges, and the music of George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.

“Mathew Janczewski’s choreography is beloved for its elegant construction, formal intelligence, and lush grace. In the most classical sense, his work is beautiful.” – Star Tribune

Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company will be performing four dances which are a small representation of the many pieces Robin has created in almost 30 years of choreographing. The common thread through these four pieces is a yearning, or perhaps a struggle, through which the dancers find a resolve and a greater connection to each other. Illustrating the beauty and poignancy of human connection has always been a driving force in Robin’s work. Her language embraces clear structure and utilizes a rare musicality. Join Robin Stiehm in a special workshop class on Tuesday, May 2 from 11:00am – 2:00pm.

(untitled) expands SuperGroup’s research into duplicitous action. Combining a simple, clear movement structure with an absurd, realistic living room drama, SuperGroup asks how we keep being with each other and how we make meaning in the in-between spaces: between body and words, between present and future, between cognitive and somatic, between us and you and us and us and you and you. Join SuperGroup for a workshop on Wednesday, May 3 from 11:00am – 2:00pm.
