Musical

The Chameleon Theatre Circle is proud to present CHESS a musical written by Richard Nelson, Lyrics by Tim Rice and Music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus at the Gremlin Theatre. Originally produced in 2000 in Chameleon’s Season 2, this is the first of three Greatest Hits from Chameleon's past to be revisited in Season 20! Check and mate!

Cold War conspiracy, musical melodrama and 1980’s power ballads fight for supremacy on the chessboard in the cult sensation by Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar) Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA). Of Chess, Rolling Stone said the “dazzling score covers nearly all the pop bases,” while Time Magazine raved that the score’s “rock symphonic synthesis was ripe with sophistication and hummable tunes.” It’s the musical you haven’t gotten to see but have always had on your list to see.

Florence (DeYong) finds herself in a romantic triangle between chess masters Freddie (Burton) who’s American, and the Russian, Anatoly (Swanson) staged by a powerful ensemble in the heart of the Cold War.  Politics, espionage and intrigue collide with love and chess, making this all too timely in our current political world. Featuring the Top 40 hit “One Night in Bangkok,” this show arrived on Broadway with great fanfare and acclaim, but is only seldom performed.

Chameleon’s production is co-directed by Brad Donaldson and Jim Vogel, Music Director is Dale Miller, Vocal Directions by Brody Meinke, and Chorographer is Marlo Teal . CHESS features performances by Emma Foster as Svetlana, Sarah DeYong as Florance, Michael Burton as Freddie, and Carl Swanson as Anatoly. Also Frank Blomgren, Jakob Gomez, Shawn A Krueger, Scott Dutton. The Ensemble is power packed with Katie Jenson, Elizabeth Wolfe, Megan Navarrette, Tyus Beeson, Alex Engelsgjerd and Brody Meinke.
