This new physical theater piece from devised theater creator and performer Katie Kaufmann follows an unlikely bond between a modern woman and Ida Lewis, the first woman lighthouse keeper made famous for her heroic rescues at sea in the 1800s. Incorporating physicality, song and shadow puppetry, KEEPER OF THE LIGHT explores isolation, obsolescence, and perseverance, finding parallels motherhood and the duty of light keeping.
This work was developed as part of Savage Umbrella’s Night of New Works program in 2016.
Katie Kaufmann is a fiscal year 2017 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
