Winner of the Obie Award, Paula Vogel’s The Baltimore Waltz is a darkly comedic fantasy about daring to find hope, joy, and even happiness in the most dire of circumstances. Based on the love and adventures of a brother and sister, one of whom is diagnosed with a deadly virus that sends the two of them spinning off to Europe to find romance and a cure.

The Baltimore Waltz is Paula Vogel’s perfect, imperfect memory of her brother Carl and the fantastical trip to Europe they planned, but never took. The play lives somewhere between fantasy and reality, between farce and tragedy, between the remembered and the imagined. Our set, sound, and costume design will reflect the fantastical journey that never actually leaves a hospital, inviting the audience into a world where childlike imagination transforms a hospital bed into a table to two at a bistro in Paris, and an IV drip into the Eiffel Tower. This play itself is a comedy, but it is also a meditation on grief, coping, and hope.

Two-time Ivey Award-winning Theatre Coup d’Etat maintains its tradition of creating a dynamic, actor-driven production. Combined with the intimate seating of Springhouse Ministry Center’s North Sanctuary, Theatre Coup d’Etat’s production of The Baltimore Waltz is another can’t-miss experience:

  • "a crazy-quilt patchwork of hyperventilating language, erotic jokes, movie kitsch and medical nightmare that spins before the audience in Viennese waltz time, replete with a dizzying fall." - NY Times
  • "an immensely likable winning comedy-drama" - Hollywood Reporter.
