The Edge Between is an evening of stories and reflections exploring Matt Guidry’s paradoxical journey, simultaneously normal and unique, of raising a child with significant disabilities. Through lyrical storytelling, music, movement, and projected imagery, Matt takes us along to that place in life where we have a foot in two worlds. It’s a story that lives at the intersection of perception and perspective, where it’s always a matter of finding balance.
The narratives in our community about disability are too often ones of struggle and hardship tinged with pity, or are about the hero overcoming obstacles. The truth, however, is that my child is just a child (now a young man), and our life together is rich, joyful, complex, sometimes boring, and sometimes hard. There are struggles and obstacles, but those facts don’t define the story. We are all more than one story.
Collaborating with Open Eye favorites Maren Ward (Director) and Kevin Kling (Creative Adviser), Matt brings three decades in the Twin Cities as performer, director, choreographer, teaching artist, parent, and disability advocate to culmination in this evening of extremely personal storytelling.
