Storytelling

"Men of factious tempers, of local prejudices, or of sinister designs, may, by intrigue, by corruption, or by other means, first obtain the suffrages, and then betray the interests, of the people. The question resulting is, whether small or extensive republics are more favorable to the election of proper guardians of the public weal..."

- James Madison, Federalist No. 10

ABOUT THE SHOW

Want to watch the returns, but don't want to listen to the pundits? Put your favored network on mute, and play this in the background. From ancient China to the Enlightenment, from the American Revolution to the Civil War, award-winning storyteller phillip andrew bennett low will be reading excerpts from some of his favorite political speeches and essays, plays and poems.

Beginning at 5pm (when the first polls close in Indiana and Kentucky) and ending at 10pm (when polls close on the west coast), or when the performer collapses into the fetal position cradling a bottle of Jameson, whichever comes first. Celebration or consolation, here's a body of material carefully curated to provide comfort and context to a historic evening, with a guarantee of no text later than 1917.
