The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company is pleased to announce that it will present The Gondoliers, from March 10th through April 2nd of 2017.

The performances will be at the Howard Conn Fine Arts Center, at Plymouth Congregational Church, located at 1900 Nicollet Avenue South, in Minneapolis.

This production of The Gondoliers will be directed by Lesley Hendrickson, with Music Direction by Dr. Randal A. Buikema.

Synopsis:

The Gondoliersor, The King of Barataria, tells the story of two just-married Venetian gondoliers who are informed by the Grand Inquisitor that one of them is actually the King of Barataria, hidden in Venice since infancy. Only their foster mother, presently at large, can identify the king. As Barataria needs its king to put down unrest in the country, they must travel there to reign jointly, leaving their newly-wedded wives behind in Venice. It also turns out that the king was wed in infancy to the beautiful daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza Toro, and so it seems he is an unintentional bigamist. Of course, the beautiful daughter is in love with a common servant! When the young Spaniard and the two Venetian wives arrive in Barataria, wanting to know which of them is queen, complications arise. No worries … the true identity of the king is revealed, and all is combed out spectacularly well by the end!

RISE UP, O MEN is a new musical featuring the men of the church and your favorite church basement Ladies who serve them. The year is 1964, in the basement kitchen of the Lutheran Church in rural Minnesota. On Sneetch Beach, there’s a line in the sand—Star Bellies on one side, Plain Bellies on the other.  That’s the way it is, was, and will be.  At least until the sneaky and greedy Sylvester Monkey McBean comes to town with his Star On machine.  Suddenly, the difference between the haves and the have nots—those with stars and those without—isn’t so clear. What will the Sneetches do now? In this rousing and inventive musical adaptation of Dr. Seuss's powerful parable about the surface things that divide us, it will take a courageous friendship between an unlikely pair of Sneetches to find the answers.

This sidesplitting, uplifting peek into the lives of the rural Norwegian Lutherans who audiences first fell in love with in 2005 is the sixth chapter of the story begun in the original Church Basement Ladies. In Rise Up O Men, series familiars Mrs. Mavis Gilmerson, Mrs. Vivian Snustad, and Mrs. Karin Engleson are busy with preparations for the church’s 1964 Centennial Celebration, and the menfolk of the parish have their own problems to solve. Karin’s husband Elroy, farmer Carl and Great War vet Arlo are joined in brotherhood by series staple Pastor E.L. Gunderson. Their camaraderie unites them as they deal with furnace salesmen, looming retirement, rival Protestant denominations, the Pastor’s bad jokes, and Arlene’s even-worse cooking.

Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came

Written by Steve Schroer

Directed by Philip D. Henry

Accompanied by an implacable Seer, Childe Roland (so called because he is not yet a knight) enters the mystical, blighted land of the Elf King to save his sister, lost to that realm by ancient and impossible rules. Along the way he crosses paths with the residents of that place, and each encounter pulls him closer to his dark destiny and and the fateful climax against the wicked elf king.

Written by Steve Schroer of Hardcover Theater and based on the same material as Stephen King's Dark Tower series, Childe Rowlande to the Dark Tower Came is an exploration of the classic poem by Robert Browning illustrating one man's struggle with true morality.

Jordan Matthews would be fine, if her mother could hold down a decent job, or if her mother hadn't been arrested on another DUI, or if her mother's boyfriend wasn't a skeevy bastard. But things aren't fine, and Jordan's life is falling apart. The adults in her life are either impotent or uninterested, and the only solace comes from out of the blue.

And Then They Fell by Tira Palmquist is a tragic look at the reality that homeless youth face and how that often directly impacts queer youth and victims of abuse however, it does have some quirks and some laughs. Starring Mindy Vang (she/her/hers) from She Kills Monsters is joining us again. Adele Bolier (they/them/theirs) from SPCPA is a relative newcomer to professional theatre but excited to join us for this show. Troy Stolp (he/him/his) who has worked all over the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs is making his Gadfly debut, as is Kjertina Whiting (they/them/theirs) who's most recently been seen performing at Huge Theater. Rounding out our cast is Starla Larson (she/her/hers) who read for us in our Crown of the Holly Queen staged reading this past December. This incredibly solid cast is the perfect ensemble to tell this important, sometimes fun, ultimately sad story. Save the dates March 17th-19th and 24th-26th!

Incorporated with this show, we are so, so beyond excited to welcome community partners Sexual Violence Center and Avenues for Homeless Youth. Reps from both will be at all shows and talkbacks, and they'll have lots of info about joining them either as a client or a volunteer. We will also be doing a goods drive for Avenues, so start rounding up any unused beauty and hygiene products, clean clothes in good condition, menstrual products, etc.

Produced in partnership with Joel Sass’ Oddfellows Collective. Conceived, written, designed and directed by Joel Sass. Featuring performer Kimberly Richardson. Including Noah Sommers Haas(performer and assistant director), Rick Miller(Performer), Ariane Mass(Performer), Sean Healey (sound), Michael Murnane (lighting), and Salima Seale (stage manager).

The Red Shoes takes its title from a classic Hans Christian Anderson story of a young girl and a pair of red shoes, and thrillingly re-imagines it as a retro-urban fairytale.

The heroine of this adventure is more of a mouse than a warrior, hiding in a tiny apartment in the middle of the Big City, fearful of venturing out, or of letting anyone (or anything) in. But she’s not alone.

Eventually a pair of haunted red shoes is delivered to her doorstep, and they propel our heroine into a harrowing film noir adventure through the labyrinths and spiral staircases of her own mind, where she must face down her fears of what lurks in the subway tunnel, and discover what fate has in store for her up on the rooftop!

Equally humorous and hair-raising, The Red Shoes draws inspiration and influences from vintage detective novels, black and white film noir movies of the 1930s and ’40s, and case studies of amnesia and multiple personality. The inventive use of manipulated objects, dolls, and masks provide a dream-like quality to the unfolding adventure.

A warm, funny one-man show by Triple Espresso co-creator and author, actor Bob Stromberg, returns to Minneapolis after performing in several cities and being chosen as “Best One-Man Show” at the 2015 United Solo Theatre Festival in New York City.

Bob Stromberg’s comic exploration of the powerful influence of art on a young boy is storytelling at its best, and utterly engaging. The Star Tribune raved “[Stromberg’s] divine comic mission seems clearly fixed on uplifting the hearts of audiences.”

That Wonder Boy is an exploration of life and art through the eyes of a youngster who “overcame a happy childhood to become a comedic artist.” Stromberg weaves semi-autobiographical experiences into a critical exploration of the long-standing bromide that great art only comes from great suffering. His utterly charming tale begins with a flying baby and soars on a creative flight of laughter, joy and wonder. Laugh-out-loud funny, but also reflective and moving, the show is a satisfying journey for all ages.

As word spreads, an increasingly ridiculous series of powerbrokers urge him to commit the deed in the name of their own ignoble causes. Based on “The Suicide” by Nikolai Erdman–a satire banned by Stalin on the eve of its premiere and written by a man who would be exiled for writing it–this colloquial adaptation begs us to consider who is the highest bidder when a man has nothing to lose.
