This magically engaging story, proving that family, friendship and resilience are found in the heart of the imagination, will grace our Hopkins Jaycees Studio in May. Crenshaw is a cat. He’s large, he’s outspoken, and…he’s imaginary. This unforgettable creature comes into 10 year old Jackson’s life to help him and his family as they fall on hard times and may have to live in their minivan…again. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything? This world premiere adaptation, based on the touching book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of The One and Only Ivan, confirms that friends matter—whether real or imaginary.

Natasha and the Coat - A WORLD PREMIERE by critically acclaimed playwright Deborah Stein

A hipster girl. An Orthodox guy. (And one fabulous fur coat!)

Natasha has just begun a fashion internship in an atelier in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. When she clumsily spills coffee on a vintage fur coat, she takes it to a dry cleaner where the work of Yossi, an Hasidic Jew, results in beautiful restoration. As Natasha, eager to please her unknowing boss, brings more and more items for cleaning, the very different lives of these two 20-somethings intersect, opening up possibilities for what their futures may hold. Join MJTC for the world premiere of a poignant play about independence, self-exploration, and defining your dreams.

“This is a love story.  It’s about mature love, marriage, romantic love, and familial love,” says director James Williams.  Set in the late 1940s against the backdrop of post-WWII recovery in America, this four- character, two-act play takes place in the segregated black neighborhood of Central Cleveland, where characters Mamie and Raymond Warren reside.  Mamie desperately needs household help after her husband has a serious accident. On the recommendation of a friend, Mamie hires a down-on-her-luck woman named Bessie, whose arrival brings surprises and new challenges. In this setting, Under this Roof explores themes of mature love, family, disability, and race on an ever-shifting axis, with often-unexpected comic, painful, and heartfelt results.
