Next to Normal- A Bold, Brave, and Breathtaking Musical

2:00 pm

  • Closing night

Northfield Arts Guild Theater
411 Third Street West, Northfield, MN 55057

Presented by Northfield Arts Guild Theater
  • Musical

The Northfield Arts Guild and director Eric Parrish will present the Tony and Pulitzer Prize - winning musical Next to Normal (Music by Tom Kitt with Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey) at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater, 411 Third Street West, Northfield. Performances will take place on July 27, 28, 29 and August 3, 4, 5 with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.

In this remarkable rock musical, a suburban household copes with crisis and the unpredictability of a mother’s worsening bipolar disorder. While the show explores serious subjects, the stunning score is filled with humor, joy, redemption and hope.  Next to Normal was chosen as "one of the year's ten best shows" by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens - all appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling mental illness for 16 years.

“What musical theater does best is raw emotion,” says director Eric Parrish, “and Next to Normal is almost unbearably emotional. A perfect balance of situational comedy and painful life situations produces an extraordinary, award winning night at the theater. It is one of the most emotionally charged scores in musical theater out there, and this cast doesn't disappoint.”

The regional cast features Michelle Drenth (Diana), Kevin Ideke (her husband, Dan), Kyle Yetzer (their son, Gabe), and Greta Jacobson (their daughter, Natalie). Elijah Leer plays Natialie’s boyfriend, Henry, and Bryan Reed plays Diana’s doctor, Madden.

Director Eric Parrish is based in Worthington, MN where he is the instructor of music and theater at Minnesota West Community and Technical College and serves as Director of Music at First Lutheran Church, and as Conductor for the Worthington Chamber Singers. Selected stage directing credits include Ten November, Nine, Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar. Notably, Eric appeared as the Pirate King in the Guild’s production of The Pirates of Penzance last summer. Parrish holds a Masters of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Gustavus Adolphus College

Tickets for Next to Normal are available at the Northfield Arts Guild, 304 Division Street South, online at www.northfieldartsguild.org, or by calling 507-645-8877.

The Guild’s production of Next to Normal is sponsored by Rob Martin Agency: Farmers Insurance.  The 2017-18 Theater Season sponsors are Neuger Communications Group and Engage Print.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Ashland Productions presents: Hairspray! The Musical!
Show runs July 27th-August 12th
Tickets on sale NOW! $13-$20

The 1950s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of 8 TONY Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs.

In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colorful array of characters, leading to social change as Tracy campaigns for the show's integration.

Hairspray explores the themes of racism and freedom of expression. It highlights individuality, and the importance of everyone working together for something to become revolutionary. The musical is empowering, as although it touches on racial issues that were prevalent in 1960s America, it focuses more on the attitudes that are associated with it, and the power that we have to change discrimination. The musical encourages individuality, acceptance and freedom. It is a musical that can be applied to any social context and time, as it highlights ongoing issues such as fat-shaming, racism and discrimination

Once a year, a magical and touching celebration of the human spirit unfolds at numerous theaters across the country. A group of children in a program called The Penguin Project take to the stage to perform a modified version of a well-known Broadway musical.  This year it will be Annie Jr. These productions are unique, however, because all the roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other neurological disorders.  They are joined on stage by a dedicated group of “peer mentors” – children the same age without disabilities who have volunteered to work side-by-side with them through 4 months of rehearsals and through the final performance.

Annie Jr.

Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Annie Jr. features everyone’s favorite little redhead in her very first adventure.
With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone's hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, finding a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Wasn't This Supposed to Be a Musical?

Ritz Theater Mainstage
345 13th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN

Presented by The Skyline Collective
  • Musical

With a title borrowed from Billy Joel and a storyline extracted from personal experience, The Skyline Collective proudly presents an entirely original show, Wasn’t This Supposed to Be a Musical? Jonathan (a nurse) and Autumn (a museum curator) are two twenty-somethings in the golden beginnings of their lives. What should’ve been a grandiose musical in a Minneapolis art gallery rapidly disintegrates into a series of misguided romances and delightfully awkward encounters. Showcasing original music through the medium of a live four-piece band and four actor-singers, Wasn’t This Supposed to Be a Musical? is a love story, but not a romantic one; it's an honest analysis of the lies we tell ourselves to feel grown up; and it’s a hopeful celebration of the kind of adulthood that lets go of the wrong dreams in favor of the ones we’d really been dreaming all along.
