When an American basketball team travels to Beijing for an exhibition game in 1989, the drama goes deeper than the strain between countries. For two men with a past and one teen with a future, the game is a chance to stake their moment in history and claim personal victories off the court. Tensions rise right up to the final buzzer as history collides with the action in the stadium. Rapid-fire comedy meets poignant reflection in this perceptive new play inspired by the life of playwright Lauren Yee’s father. Contains mature language.

In between picking eggs, milking cows, and dusting knickknacks, they congregate with some of the other lovable folks who inhabit this rural community: Earl, who delivers the mail up and down Rural Route One; Fergus, the hired man; and Tillie, who chronicles the action for the Fish County Weekly.

With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs, and spanking new original songs, YOU SMELL BARN celebrates rural life in the 1950’s. The story begins with a motionless tableau, the actors frozen in mid-action, their faces conjuring an ancient frieze. At the snap of fingers, the spell is broken and the statues spring to life. And so, this classic story of civil disobedience unfolds. Director Meagan Kedrowski adapts Sophocles’ timeless tragedy with help from the Ensembles. Kedrowski’s “thoughtful approach juxtaposes the rituals of fate and sacrifice against the wounded family dynamic at the heart of this play. The results are powerful.” (Star Tribune)

From the groundbreaking, gender-bending Split Britches theater company comes a political satire that explores aging, anxiety and “doomsday” theory through conversation and collaboration with an array of elders and artists. Named after the buried or forgotten munitions of war known as UXOs, this unique production combines darkly playful Dr. Strangelove-inspired performance with a daring new protocol for public discussion — the Situation Room. As the performers contemplate where UXOs are located, how much energy they contain and what would happen if they were uncovered, they suggest that this potentially dangerous ammo may also be a metaphor for our unexplored desires.

The British website Theatretastic describes the show, “We currently live in a digital world, where most of us communicate with each other using email or social media. 84 Charing Cross Road transports us back to a time when correspondence involved detailed descriptive written accounts of everyday events and plans and hopes for the future. Receiving a letter from overseas was a particular delight.

“Adapted from Helene Hanff’s bestselling book of the same name by James Roose Evans, [it] tells the true story of the 20-year correspondence between Hanff (Jennifer Allton, New Richmond) and Frank Doel, the chief buyer of Marks and Co. Booksellers (Andrew Troth, St. Paul). Spanning a period from 1949 until 1969, the production paints a social picture of Britain from post war through to the brash, bright 1960s.

“This is a touching story of two people brought together by their love of literature. Hanff, a New York writer, contacted the bookshop (a supplier of rare second-hand books) in 1949 and a warm long-distance friendship developed between her, Doel, and other members of the staff. This resulted in the exchange of Christmas and birthday gifts, as well as Hanff sending parcels of food to a Britain still reeling from the effects of war.”

The other cast members are Leigh Webber, Blaine; Shelly Anderl, Minneapolis; Emily Rose Duea, Robin Gilmer and Lela Olson, St. Paul; Caleb Kaczmarck, New Richmond; and Scott H. Peterson, Hudson.

Director Mary Cutler staged The Phipps’ productions of Making God Laugh and A Murder is Announced. Her directing credits include Theatre Unbound, Bloomington Civic, Buffalo Community Theatre, Lex-Ham Theatre, The Park Theatre, Brazen Theatre, Eden Prairie Players, and SOAR Arts.
