Inspired by a real event and featuring the Grammy-nominated score by Steven Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past – and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.

Performing Motherhood: Confronting toxic myths and post-postpartum mental health with humor and truth-telling.

An evening of performance and discussion, featuring the the world premiere of playwright Gina Montet’s script
“Overactive Letdown”

cfpa is delighted to host a workshop and performance of Gina Montet’s ground-breaking script, “Overactive Letdown.” Montet, director Jennie Ward, and a professional cast of actors will assemble for a brief workshop, diving deep into the play’s fantastical structure and authentic storytelling of two critical human experiences: becoming a parent and living with mental illness. On Saturday, March 16th, at 7 pm, the artists will present a public reading of the script. This reading will be deepened by the workshop process, where the playwright, director, and actors will investigate creative choices that can open up the story to audiences from a broad range of cultural backgrounds and experiences. A professional mental health provider will guide the audience and artists through a conversation about our own experiences of parenthood/being parented, and the realities of living (and parenting) with mental illness. These multiple paths into the story support both artists and audiences who seek broad representation and deepened experience in art works and in their daily lives.

A graduate of the University of Miami, Gina Montet has been active in South Florida theater for almost twenty years as a writer, director and actor. Gina began her career as a playwright in 1998 with her musical, “Little Fire,” at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, where she continued to write and direct for eight seasons. Among her many successful works are her environmental education and literacy incentive plays for young audiences, which have been touring Florida since 2000 and continue to entertain and educate tens of thousands of Florida students each year. Recently, Gina was a featured playwright in the Florida Atlantic University Theatre Lab New Play Festival and is currently a resident of the Miami Dade Department Cultural Affairs Playwright Development Program. An experienced educator, Gina shares her talents with several schools and theaters in Miami where she teaches Theatre Arts and Film Production.

Advance reservations are encouraged.

Cyrano de Bergerac is the full package: he’s a poet, playwright and consummate swordsman. The only thing standing in the way of declaring his love for Roxane is his grotesquely large nose. When Roxane confesses that she’s fallen for a handsome young cadet named Christian, Cyrano takes him under his wing, adds brains to his beauty and, through Christian, expresses his own feelings to Roxane without her suspecting a thing. Wit, wordplay and rousing passion make this a heroic comedy for the ages.

In 2018, Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court amid allegations of sexual assault. For the first time in years, Roe v. Wade fell into constitutional danger. At the same time, the #metoo movement sparked a national dialogue around power and consent, and record numbers of women ran for public office and won. In a country continuing to fracture along political fault lines, women were on the frontlines of the divide. Following the tradition of The Great Divide I & II, Pillsbury House Theatre has commissioned five short plays on the state of women in the current political climate. Featuring all-women playwrights, actresses, and production staff, She Persists: The Great Divide III is a theatrical experience by, for, and about women.

It’s been two years since Fiona and Guy’s son Tristan disappeared, and while Fiona endlessly travels through her memories of him, Guy’s frustration and inability to understand her grows. Along the way, the two lose their ability to speak plainly. Familiar phrases start to jumble and change meaning—somber words become punchlines and reassuring words lose their solace. By turns playful, tragic and vulnerable, Lauren Yee’s in a word explores how the language we use changes our reality and shows us that dealing with loss is a lifelong process.

A play in music written in 1937, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK by Marc Blitzstein is set in Steeltown, USA. Mr. Mister, the corporate magnate, has bought up (or paid off) every sector of the community: the church, the press, the university, the artists. A prostitute arrives in Steeltown, and is immediately picked up for soliciting. Hauled into night court, she is befriended by a derelict pharmacist, who explains that all the others (who have been hauled in mistakenly) are as guilty of selling themselves as she is. Through flashback and song, the piece illustrates how each of the civic leaders sold out to Mr. Mister, with the exception of Larry Foreman, a union organizer who is attempting to get the whole town to organize.

One of the first pro-union musicals written in this country, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK, directed by Orson Welles, was premiered by the Federal Theatre Project. This first production was legendary (the context for the original production is explored brilliantly in Tim Robbins film of the same name). Just before opening night, the company received word that budget cuts would prevent the show from opening and the artists were padlocked out of the building. In a historic display of the show must go on, the company and audience marched 20 blocks to a theatre that the company had secured, along with a rented piano, and the show did go on.
