ARENADANCES' Mathew Janczewski brings his subtle, rich and viscerally honest choreographic voice to the TEK BOX stage at Cowles Center for Dance & The Performing Arts with a one-of-a-kind performance by ARENADANCES.

Audience members will enjoy a full-evening of dance performed by an all-female sextet, against the backdrop of Nils Frahm’s experimental, ethereal and contemplative music. A theme of personal and collective power will prevail, as the dancers negotiate the space around them, and each other, with movement that builds layer by layer, working toward a powerful resolution. Crafted collaboratively between Janczewski and the dancers, the piece is an intentional meditation on a larger social question: how do we come together in one room, face conflict and negotiate, so that we can find strength as one collective voice? An apt and urgent question in such a historically divisive and turbulent time.

About ARENADANCES:

The mission of ARENA DANCES is to make dance accessible to all through the presentation of contemporary dance, educational outreach, and community gatherings to inspire, promote dialogue and diversity. We continually re-draw the boundaries of our work, challenging physical extremes and exploring bodies as they relate to each other and space. The work is abstract in form, giving shape to emotions and exploring the depths and limits of what drives us as humans to connect, break away and survive.

Wayward Theatre Company is committed to bringing work outside of traditional theatre settings, allowing audiences to engage with texts and spaces in new and exciting ways. Next up on Wayward’s site-specific docket is Shakespeare’s brilliant tragedy; Macbeth, playing at the historic James J. Hill House.

As a follow-up to our extended, sold-out run of Hamlet in the spring of 2018, Macbeth will be the company’s most ambitious endeavor to date. Working side by side in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society, Wayward will utilize this historic landmark in ways patrons of the arts and of the Hill House have yet to experience.

Macbeth, considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, brings audiences deep into the minds of an ambitious couple, hellbent on power and position. A supernatural prophecy calls a would-be king and queen to action and as they work to realize their greatest dreams, their world turns suddenly into a living nightmare.

A tin soldier built not quite like the others, a ballerina that dances but cannot travel, and the carelessly cruel circumstances that pushes them apart. Take a journey through movement, shadow play and sound as two outsiders strive against their limitations and seemingly impossible challenges to find acceptance and connection.

A non-verbal retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier, STEADFAST is a bittersweet tale of loneliness and belonging, love and loss, and keeping the light of hope alive in the face of darkness.

A sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the women quickly escalates into a game of practical jokes and one-upmanship, revealing hidden truths that neither wants exposed. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, Ripcord is uproarious and heartwarming comedy.

NOTE: There are staggered start times of 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM for this production.

Presented by Mathew Janczewski's ARENA DANCES
  • Dance
  • Storytelling
