Audition Preparation

Dead Man’s Cell Phone is a magical and astute little play by Sarah Ruhl.  A woman, Jean, sitting in a café answers the ringing cell phone of the recently expired man at the next table.  That fateful decision begins an odd and highly theatrical journey of love, connection, compassion, and morality as she encounters a handful of extraordinary characters - those closest to the dead man. Jean’s is a quest chock full of humor and heart and heartache. At its core, the play is about the absurdity of our attempts to connect with one another superficially and the power that comes from being fully present for each other.  We are looking for actors with brazen creativity and a willingness to unleash the inner oddball.

Please prepare a two-minute contemporary monologue.  You may also be asked to read from the script.

Character Descriptions

Jean, a woman:  From her initial decision to answer the phone she is driven by curiosity and kindness.  A little bohemian and awkward.  Quirky, likable, empathic, genuine.  30s

Gordon, a dead man:  A charismatic man of questionable ethics, Gordon was/is a catalyst for strong emotions in those who orbited closely around him.  Among other challenges this actor will tackle a four-page monologue. 30-45.

Mrs. Gottlieb:  Gordon’s mother:  An outspoken and pampered woman without much of a filter.  A touch extravagant in manner and dress.  She is not shy about her grief.  Lacks empathy.  50-70.

Hermia:  Gordon’s widow.  Had a moral revulsion to Gordon’s work, but misses him more than she imagined she might.  Sexually frank after she’s had a few cocktails.  30-50.

Dwight:  Gordon’s younger brother.  Sells stationary.  Overshadowed by Gordon in life and death.  An appealing nerd.  Unaware of his own quirky charms.  25-45

The Other Woman (doubles as The Stranger):  Gordon’s mistress.  An international woman of mystery.  A film noir femme fatale type.  Skilled with a tube of lipstick.  The Stranger is a shady and dangerous foreigner.  Both roles require dialects.  25-45
