Musical Theater Master Class with Visiting Artist Matthew Steffens at the Guthrie

Led by New York based director, actor & choreographer Matthew Steffens, this musical theater intensive will sharpen auditioning techniques with a focus on both voice and movement. This intimate class will provide performers the opportunity to work closely with an artist whose career has taken him all over the world - from performing on Broadway stages, Film and TV to directing and choreographing award winning productions including the Drama Desk Award recipient Queen of the Night.

Students are asked to come with a prepared 16-32 bar contemporary musical theater cut and clothes they can move in.

Workshop Schedule:
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Vocal Audition Techniques: Receive 1:1 feedback and insight to nail your next audition. Each artist will present their vocal cut (with a provided accompanist) and explore the arc of storytelling in their piece & finding a confident approach to taking the audience on a journey.

8:00 – 9:30 p.m.: Dance Combinations: Matt will work teach a dance combination and then provide individual feedback so participants feel comfortable in a movement/dance call. The combination will work for many different levels so each artist can work on connecting motivation to movement and challenge participants to use their individual style and technique to tell a story.

About the Teaching Artist
Matthew Steffens is a NYC based director, choreographer and performer. Most recently, he served as Associate Choreographer on the Kennedy Center’s new production of CHESS. Previous credits include Broadway/Off Broadway: Doctor Zhivago (Associate Choreographer); Queen of the Night (Drama Desk Award - Associate Choreographer / Resident Director), Pretty Hunger (Public Theater - Choreographer), Bountiful (R.Evolucion Latina - Choreographer) , BC BEAT (Choreographer). Regionally, he has directed and/or choreographed Violet, Guys & Dolls, 9 to 5, A Christmas Carol, Hairspray, The Pajama Game. Theaters include Guthrie Theater, Playmakers Repertory Company, The Mountain Playhouse as well as internationally in China on the original Chinese musical Princess Butterfly. As a performer he has appeared on Broadway in Promises, Promises, Women on the Verge and has danced, fought and flown his way through 14 operas at the Metropolitan Opera. Tours include West Side Story, CONTACT, Beauty & the Beast and he has been seen on film and TV in The Last Five Years, Across the Universe, Black Box, "Smash", Kennedy Center Awards - Chita Rivera, Pan Am (Assoc. Choreographer). Upcoming: A Chorus Line (Director/Choreographer - Heritage Theatre Festival), The Legend of Georgia McBride (Choreographer - Guthrie Theater).
