Nautilus Music-Theater: Balk Institute ONLINE!

Online classes: Professional Development for Singer-Actors!

JULY 20th TO JULY 31st, 2020

The Wesley Balk Opera / Music-Theater Institute is unlike any other professional development program in the country. Now in its 43rd year, the Institute builds upon the basic skills of singing, acting, and moving, and unifies these essential musical and theatrical components into integrated performance. Since its inception, the Institute has had a profound impact upon hundreds of participants who have found its concepts applicable to all styles of performance, ranging from traditional opera to Broadway musicals to new and experimental music-theater.

“I feel reconnected with my performance
           spirit after this incredible session!"

Although the coronavirus pandemic required us to postpone this year's regular Institute, the faculty has been working to re-frame its curriculum for online presentation. Many of us have already been teaching online, and working together, we have now devised ways that allow participants to learn the basics of radiant performance virtually.

"The Balk Institute provides a safe and quite challenging
environment that fuels artists to do our best!"

While our regular Institute is three weeks, we have condensed the crucial elements into a two-week (10 day) session, offered during the last two weeks of July. Tuition is $700, less than half our usual cost. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to all, although priority will be given to performers who identify with under-represented communities. Based on past Institute participation, that would include performers who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other people of color), performers who have disabilities, and transgender people.

"I have been  revolutionized as a performer!"

The faculty that has conducted the Institute for many years remains the same. Bios for the faculty, along with information about our regular Institute offerings, are available elsewhere on this website. Note that other than the specifics of the schedule and the registration process, the description of the Institute is essentially the same.

"This is where you go to find your creative soul again!”

The Institute is open to all performers without audition. The Institute is focused on telling stories through music, regardless of style or genre. Over the years, we have worked with opera singers, musical theater performers, actors who sing, cabaret singers, and other artists interested in expanding their ability to move audiences through song.

A draft schedule of working sessions is available as a downloadable PDF below.
You can register online at
Registration due by July 6th, 2020.
