Tonight I fought my way through the torrential downpour and headed over to Mixed Blood to catch the zombie musical Zombie High School! with the other die hard Fringers. All of us were soaked straight through and crammed wall-to-wall in the lobby as we waited to take our seats. The stage for this show couldn't be more perfectly set with the off-stage thunder and lightning that was provided for this absolutely delightful show by Late Night Menu. The plot is relatively simple: taking an outsider (a human) who elects to attend a high school (George Romero Senior High) whose primary student body are zombies. As expected, the two worlds collide. From the opening song "Welcome to the End of the World" to the closing number "Goodbye from the End of the World" the show is not only a delight for the post-John Hughes generation, but for everyone in between. What's most intriguing about this show isn't necessarily the plot, but the 13 well-crafted a cappella arrangements that are sung throughout the show. I have to come clean and say that I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but this was absolute candy to my ears mixed in with a genre that I absolutely love. While Late Night Menu dished out plenty of songs they didn't neglect the heart of the zombie genre which includes some blood and dismemberment. So far it's the first Fringe show I've attended this year in this genre that's received a standing ovation. It's nice to see that sometimes terror can carry a tune.
