So, you know there's this gender discrimination in the theater? Male playwrights and artistic directors dominate the landscape. All the good roles are for men. Here in the Cities, we've got a good little theater company whose name comes from a 2003 study that women make up only 20% of the theater artists.
That's what everyone says. Is it really true?
Well, a Princeton economics student (and soon-to-be Harvard grad student) actually did a study on it and discovered two interesting facts: 1) It is true. 2) It's the fault of women artistic directors and literary managers. (OK, it's not entirely their fault but there is a pretty shocking revelation in the study about the role that female institution leaders play in discrimination.)
Anyway, I'm a huge big fan of actual information that put our assumptions to the test. You've gotta go read the whole article.
