Set in the most romantic of cities, Florence, Italy, The Light in the Piazza is a love story of a young American woman, Clara Johnson, who, while on holiday, falls for a young Italian man, Fabrizio Naccarelli. When Clara's mother Margaret learns of the affair, she opposes it for reasons that only gradually become known to the audience. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara’s future, but her own hopes as well.
