A musical and literary chronicle concert of the life and 30-year career of Belgian chansonnier, social commentator, and beloved performance artist Jacques Brel.
Take a journey back to mid-20th century Belgium, France, and America to explore the life's work of one of modern music's most influential artists.
Capturing the major events of Jacques Brel's life through song, story, visual media, and vocal performance, this seasoned group of performing artists will present a challenging set of French and English language material, direct from the best of the Jacques Brel catalogue. With his great influence on popular American artists as diverse as Sinatra, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Judy Collins, David Bowie, Sting, and Nirvana, audiences will be delighted to discover the depth and breadth of Brel's impact on the music of our time.
About Chronofon Productions
Chrono - (pertaining to time) fon - (abbreviation of "fonic", describing something we hear, such as music or a recording of music.
Chronofon Productions is a confluence of four principle Minnesota performing artists — Dan Chouinard, Diana Grasselli, Bradley Greenwald and Prudence Johnson — who together, conceive, research, write, design, direct, and perform musical chronicles of past and present artists, time periods, and places. Their diverse voices and writing and directorial styles complement and challenge one another, to develop dynamic, theatrical concerts for audiences of all ages and eco-ethnic backgrounds.
The artistic goals set forth by this group of experienced collaborators include successfully representing the artistic merit and significance of their subjects through the exploration and exposition of its music, art, culture, and social mirrors, while executing the material with depth, style, innovation and humor.
In collaboration with the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library and Open Eye Figure Theatre, and with support from The Minnesota Regional Arts Council, Chronofon has created sold-out productions for the past several years, including Weill & Brecht - The Berlin Years; Jacques Brel: When We Have Only Love and '66: Talkin' Bout My Generation.
