KHEPHRA : A HIP HOP HOLIDAY STORY

Tru Ruts presents Shá Cage's culturally-charged work Khephra: A Hip Hop Holiday Story for the 2nd year. The show looks at a young girl, Khephra and mother who move from Africa to the United States after the child’s dad passes away to start life in a very new community. In doing so they adjust to the culture, acclimate and ultimately the young woman claims and reclaims herself and her identity through hip hop and African music and dance.
It is about letting go, holding onto and reclaiming. This exciting 55 minute one-act is a choreo-poem integrating elements of drama, movement and puppetry written largely with poetry and verse. Last year’s premiere was over-sold and in high demand at Open Eye Figure Theatre. It left kids and adults alike belting Christmas songs in laughter and bliss.
With Cage seamlessly inhabiting different characters and manipulating objects, the show tells a story that is both personal and universal, exploring home, migration and immigration through multiple lenses.
“So many people requested that the show return as a Holiday tradition. We realized the great need for non-traditional plays around this time of year that allow families to ‘play’ and have a good time.” – Shá Cage
Khephra features Destiny Anderson (movement/performance) along with a stellar artistic team of collaborators including Truthmaze (percussion), Rico Mendez (sound), E.G. Bailey (director), Jamela Pettiford (vocalist) and more.
