Stone Soup - Apr 21 - May 21, 2017

The classic folktale of the feared strangers who inspire a whole community through the use of one little stone charms its way onto our main stage this spring in a world premiere musical. When war-weary foreigners arrive in the village square, fear and suspicion reign. But as the outsiders start to make soup out of a stone, each of the locals is prompted to contribute to the ever-growing, communal meal. Come share this ageless story with us as it serves up a delightfully poignant reminder that community is built one ingredient at a time.

A Lutheran take on the classical "hero" journey, RISE UP, O MEN is the story of men (and women) who become larger than themselves; it's the story of a group of farmers and John Deere dealers, and church basement ladies, who rise to the requirement of heroism in order to help their community and its future. RISE UP, O MEN is a new musical featuring the men of the church and your favorite church basement Ladies who serve them. The year is 1964, in the basement kitchen of the Lutheran Church in rural Minnesota. As these hard-working farmers discuss their scrap lumber piles and their tractors and preparations for the Centennial Celebration, they unintentionally disrupt the order of the kitchen...but that's what happens when you let the roosters in the hen house.

Sculptor Arnold Rubek has it all: fame, fortune, a beautiful young wife. Yet his work has descended into mediocrity, and his life has sunk into a pit of boredom. A chance encounter with his muse—the model for his masterpiece and the only woman he ever loved—ignites in him the passions he has long stifled. Art and life play out their conflict as Rubek searches for the man he once was, the artist his muse once inspired. Subtitled "A Dramatic Epilogue," Ibsen's final play is also the last in our series of adaptations by Minnesota playwright Jeffrey Hatcher.

"A splendid, intelligent musical... It's all you can hope for in children's theatre. But the best surprise is that this show is the most adult new musical of the season." – USA Today

Based on the beloved children's book, The Secret Garden is a musical telling of a classic Victorian story. Eleven year-old orphan Mary Lennox is taken to live at the estate of her reclusive uncle Archibald. A deep melancholy pervades the house and its overgrown grounds, but Mary's youthful spirit leads her to find beauty and joy in the place. An enthralling show for adults and a perfect introduction to "grown-up" theater for children, The Secret Garden is a story of spring, renewal, and the happiness a young girl can nurture when she is determined to make things grow.

GIRL SHAKES LOOSE
Directed by May Adrales

Why is it so hard to grow up? GIRL is a good girl: smart, beautiful, and a little rebellious, or, as her family would say, “hard-headed.” For the most part, she has played by the rules, finishing college and then graduate school. She is perfectly poised for success, but something is in her way. Floundering in love, life, and career, GIRL goes on a journey to discover what she’s missing, but wherever she goes, there she is. Eventually, GIRL learns that what she’s seeking is herself: powerful, grounded, and so much stronger than she thought. A groundbreaking new musical by Zakiyyah Alexander and Imani Uzuri, GIRL Shakes Loose is the soulful story of one woman’s search for herself. Featuring the lush poetry of Sonia Sanchez and a stirring original score, you won’t want to miss this world premiere. Brimming with hope, humor, and headstrong passion, you’ll cheer GIRL on, remembering your own journey along the way.

Are we entering our New Normal, or is this just a phase? Is ‘whitelash’ real, or just another piece of ‘fake news’? Pillsbury House Theatre commissioned five new 10-minute plays by local writers responding to the deeply partisan split on the direction of our country. In polarizing times of national upheaval and civil unrest, how do we deal with competing truths? Where does the election leave us, as individuals, as communities, as a country? The Great Divide is a personal, powerful and visceral response to the partisan animosity that has become our post-election reality.

Mixed Blood presents the Regional Premiere of Qui Nguyen’s sexy and hilarious VIETGONE!

A brilliant mash-up of comic book aesthetics, martial arts, and hip-hop.

Mixed Blood Theatre is proud to announce the final show in its 2016/2017 Season, VIETGONE. In VIETGONE, award winning pioneer of “geek theater” Qui Nguyen brilliantly chronicles the love story of his parents meeting in an Arkansas refugee center after fleeing Vietnam during the fall of Saigon in 1975. The playwright’s journey to understand his parents’ immigrant love story in the wake of war and loss is marked by wit, unrepeatable curses, and a comic book sensibility that ultimately packs an unexpected emotional punch. It’s is a buddy story, a proto-feminist tale, an all-American romance, and a motorcycle road trip adventure that 40 years later revisits how we think about the Vietnam War and its heroes and victims.

Conceived by Andrew Dolan & Hayley Finn | Written by Hayley Finn

Here’s your chance to get inside the head of a character like you’ve never experienced before! Two simultaneous stories. One stage. 70 sets of headphones. A play about loss, family secrets and the things you can’t control.

WHILE YOU WERE OUT follows a woman who lost her mother at a young age as she figures out how to cope with her mother’s absence, stay connected to her past, and carve her own path.

Twenty years after her mother’s death, Bea hungers for more information about the woman her mother was from the adults who knew her best, but her dad’s gift to Bea of her mother’s journal presents the possibility of finding out more about her mom than she bargained for. Fast-forward 30 years, Bea finds sharp-edged memories of her mother harder to conjure, but still feels her mother’s presence in unexpected ways.

The audience, divided into two groups, hears one or the other of the stories through a personal headset, picking up clues about the concurrent tale along the way as the two stories overlap and intersect. This is the second headset-drama created by Hayley and Andrew, who first experimented with the form in PRIVATE PARTY, developed as part of Red Eye's 2015 new works festival.

Inspired by the passion and vitality in the way that audiences respond to their favorite band, DaNCEBUMS set out to cultivate the same enthusiasm for their dances. The journey began at the 2014 MN Fringe with DaNCEBUMS Presents dancebums by dance bums with special guests and Dancebums. In the show, DaNCEBUMS played the role of a band performing the final stop of their global tour. Fueled by a dancer’s envy of the the love and support for the Minnesota music scene, they have worked tirelessly to transform fiction into fact. By creating choreography that adapts to any space, DaNCEBUMS engage hearts and minds in dark clubs, clandestine parties, and the most sought after auditoriums. This April, their hard work pays off with a month-long residency at Icehouse.

Envisioned as a journey through the core elements what it means to be a DaNCEBUM, this unique residency brings together performers from dance, music, and beyond. The program includes local favorites and emerging stars:

DaNCINESS - A celebration of the visceral delight of movement. Wednesday, April 5th, with Hiponymous, and P•PL.

HaRDNESS – Push your physical, intellectual, and supernatural self to the limits. Tuesday, April 11th, with Gay Henry, Hijack, & tony the scribe.

BuMMINESS – If you don’t know how, just DIY. Equal parts lazy and serious. Tuesday, April 18th, with Itch Princess, Theo Langason, and Sam Robertson.

PiZZA – Pizza stands for universal enjoyment, as a theme and experience. Thursday, April 27th, with The Controversial New ‘Skinny Pill,’ and Free Music.

DaNCEBUMS is a group of five making dance collaboratively and non-hierarchically in Minneapolis. Dubbed “the best dance party in town,” their work straddles the arty and the party as they knowingly move between precise technique and casual pop sensibility. In a search for radical joy, they embrace the awkward, conjure nostalgia, and contemplate bright futures. Their crowd-pleasing performance is imbued with humor, groove, exertion, and extreme bliss.

They have presented work at the Walker Art Center, Red Eye Theater, The Southern Theater, and the Bryant Lake Bowl. Their webseries, moves4u2do, allows fans to take the choreography off the stage and into their lives with simple instructional videos. Currently, DaNCEBUMS is realizing their dream of becoming a dance band - taking their work out of the theater and into bars, music venues, and parties.
