Stone Soup - Apr 21 - May 21, 2017

The classic folktale of the feared strangers who inspire a whole community through the use of one little stone charms its way onto our main stage this spring in a world premiere musical. When war-weary foreigners arrive in the village square, fear and suspicion reign. But as the outsiders start to make soup out of a stone, each of the locals is prompted to contribute to the ever-growing, communal meal. Come share this ageless story with us as it serves up a delightfully poignant reminder that community is built one ingredient at a time.

KRAZY KAMP (GRADES 6-12)

Show dates: May 12th - May 21st
Rehearsals: March 21st - May 20th

Adam Apple, the wheeler dealer director of Camp John Smith is in trouble.  He and his sidekick, Willard, are destined for “a real job” unless they get their camp in shape.  But the rambunctious “gentlemen of John Smith” need a place to stay until things get put back together.  Adam finally convinces Eve Hunnicutt, the manager of the girls’ fashionable Camp Pocahontas, to give the boys a home.  When serene Pocahontas comes in contact with wild John Smith, this entertaining farce bursts with hilarity.  Of course, no one is to know the boys are staying, including the camp’s owner, Mrs. Thistlemist. Keeping any calm, however, is beyond reality when a parade of hilarious characters in addition to the John Smith boys wander into camp:  Elmer Crumb, from the carnival with his associate, Cleopatra Nile, who is never without her snakes, Clams Marinara, the notorious hood (who has a wild tune written about him!), the flashily-dressed Dixie, who carries a dinky pistol in a violin case, and the Mo Sisters, three ladies(?)  making a celebrity visit to Camp Pocahontas.  Toss in a poison ivy victim who resembles a walking mummy...  that’s just for starters!  Problems stack on top of each other until once charming Camp Pocahontas is declared unfit for habitation by the state inspector.  The choice songs in this show will have you singing along.

A Lutheran take on the classical "hero" journey, RISE UP, O MEN is the story of men (and women) who become larger than themselves; it's the story of a group of farmers and John Deere dealers, and church basement ladies, who rise to the requirement of heroism in order to help their community and its future. RISE UP, O MEN is a new musical featuring the men of the church and your favorite church basement Ladies who serve them. The year is 1964, in the basement kitchen of the Lutheran Church in rural Minnesota. As these hard-working farmers discuss their scrap lumber piles and their tractors and preparations for the Centennial Celebration, they unintentionally disrupt the order of the kitchen...but that's what happens when you let the roosters in the hen house.

It's an iconic courtroom drama in which the audience never sees the inside of a courtroom. MANKATO, MN -- Merely Players Community Theatre opens their final production of the 2016-17 Season, The Dixie Swim Club, on Friday, May 12.

The Dixie Swim Club is the story of five Southern women who meet one long weekend every August to recharge lifelong relationships first formed after meeting through their college swim team. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they gather at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the things that life flings at them.

This production sees the return of several Merely Players veterans: Maggie Maes, Cindy Olson, and Carol Rath. Maes is directing, while Olson and Rath return to the main-stage after long hiatuses (12 and 10 years respectively) bringing life to the characters of Vernadette (Olson), the self-deprecating and acerbic one, and Dinah (Rath), the wisecracking, overachiever, career dynamo. The power-house acting ensemble is rounded out by Laura Anthony Conn playing the role of super-organizer Sheree, and newcomers Christi Smith as Lexie, a southern belle who is neither short on charm nor husbands, and Lisa Noll portraying sweet but not entirely innocent Jeri Neal.

“We have had so much fun bringing this show to life,” Maes said. “It’s beautifully written, and it’s such a pleasure to work with amazing actors on a piece that celebrates friendship in such a funny and poignant way. Audiences will be thoroughly entertained and moved by this story”. Performances are May 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and May 14 and 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Community Center Auditorium in Mankato.

Tickets for The Dixie Swim Club can be purchased by ordering online at www.merelyplayers.com/tickets or by calling the Merely Players box office at 507-388-5483 and leaving a message (staff will return calls). Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $10 for youth (under 12).

Written by Steven Carl McCasland, Little Wars features Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein, Agatha Christie, Alice B. Toklas and Muriel Gardiner having the best what-if dinner party you can imagine. Together they’ll drink, scoff and face their demons. Everyone has a confession. Someone has a secret.

Shelli Place directs the all-women cast which includes Candace Barrett-Birk, Sue Scott, Elizabeth Desotelle, Laura Adams, Vanessa Gamble, Alison Edwards, and Miriam Schwartz. Little Wars is the debut performance of PRIME Productions, a new professional theater company in the Twin Cities focused on “Celebrating women in their second act.”

Glorifying the triumph of the human spirit, The Elephant Man has been hailed by The New York Times as a “startling act of magic.” In 19th-century England, John Merrick is born with a genetic condition that leaves him horribly disfigured. First viewed as a carnival sideshow freak, he is ultimately embraced by the highest levels of English society. As Merrick struggles to understand what it means to be human, he imparts on others a lesson about dignity and ultimately proves that true beauty lies in the eye – and the soul – of the beholder.
