Is there anything more fulfilling than finally getting your house truly, deeply clean? We may never know because The Clean House is a side-splitting comedy about a cleaning lady who’d rather perfect her stand-up routine than clean the house. As she spends her days not cleaning, she befriends her boss’s sister—who lives only to clean. Toss in a love triangle and some sibling rivalries and you get a whimsical and moving portrait of humanity, reminding us that the messes and disappointments of life can be the most unexpectedly fulfilling times of all.

Both are despondent when they learn that Viola’s father has promised her to the stuffy Lord Wessex in order to gain a title for their family. Under the veil of secrecy, Will and Viola’s passionate love affair becomes the basis of the very play he is writing – Romeo and Juliet. Presented by HATCH Dance & Poolboy

HATCH Dance joins City Pages’ 2017 Best New Band, Poolboy on stage for an evening of contemporary dance and alternative music July 5-8, 2018 at The Southern Theater. Featuring the world premiere of Isotope, an exploration of the shadow self through music and movement.

Melding modalities and approaches, Helen Hatch (choreographer) and Seth Conover (music) collaborate creating an interdisciplinary performance, bringing together artists from Minneapolis, and merging two worlds that rarely intersect. Featuring dancers Berit Ahlgren, Helen Hatch, Kacey Hauk, Anton LaMon, Jadyn Reddy and Christian Warner.

HATCH Dance is a contemporary dance company presenting the choreography of Helen Hatch. A graduate of the Ailey/Fordham BFA program in New York, Helen performed with Minnesota Dance Theatre from 2011-2017. Helen’s choreography has been presented at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, the 2011 Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival, 2014 MN Fringe Festival, and most recently at Minnesota Dance Theatre. In 2012, Minnesota Monthly named her one of their “10 Artists to Watch” stating that she “embod[ies] ballet’s tension between technique and emotion. In her own choreography, blending ballet with vigorous American movement, this edginess leaves you breathless.”

Poolboy is a slow-burning, atmospheric alternative band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their songs are hosts to entities they don't quite understand. In 2017, they were named City Pages' Best New Band. “The music is impressionistic like psych, though it’s more perturbed — odd and indistinct, it’s music that captivates regardless of how it’s categorized.”-Jerard Fagerberg, City Pages

Produced for the first time ever on the S&C stage, Wilde’s witty, satirical lark through parlors and gardens of Victorian England highlights the wonderful understatement, “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” Two bachelors, Jack and Algernon, create alter egos named Ernest in order to escape their tedious London obligations. The two men woo two charming ingénues, who both fall madly in love – each woman with her own Ernest. The story is complete with the ritual of Afternoon Tea, and of course, the impressive and inimitable Lady Bracknell, who is the unforgettable and domineering voice of Victorian propriety. Through a number of silly twists and turns, status is achieved, true love and even truer identities are revealed, and we all learn the “vital Importance of Being Earnest.”

Presented by Guthrie Theater created by Rude Mechs and ensemble
  • Experimental

For the first time in its history, the Guthrie will host Austin, TX-based theater collective Rude Mechs (aka Rude Mechanicals) in a development residency to present their latest original work Not Every Mountain, a beguiling meditation on change and permanence. Set against the backdrop of a soft-spoken rumination on life, relationships and ephemerality, performers use simple elements like string, cardboard and magnets to make giant mountains slowly rise, shift and grow. With some help from the audience, the mountains come alive, the seasons change and the moon makes its way across the sky. Since 1995, Rude Mechs has created and produced a genre-defying slate of original works in Texas and toured nationally and abroad. Not Every Mountain is the first episode in Perverse Results, the ensemble’s long-form experiment in episodic collaboration.

Not Every Mountain was created in collaboration with the full ensemble. The style, structure, pace and performance were collectively arranged.

It's 1957 and two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, are prowling the streets of Manhattan's West Side. When Tony falls for Maria, the sister of a rival gang member, a rumble is planned. Like Romeo and Juliet they're caught in an ages-long feud with no escape, even as they pledge their love for each other. Through the genius of Bernstein and Sondheim, incomparable hits like "Maria," "Tonight," "Cool" and "I Feel Pretty" are merged with the greatest love story ever told in this larger-than-life musical.
