The world premiere of “What Guys Really Want” features true, heartfelt stories of masculinity told from the male perspective and portrayed through a series of gripping vignettes.

The narrow definition of masculinity in our society creates a tremendous challenge for boys and men to be their true, authentic selves. Boys and men are inundated with negative messages from the media, movies, music, peers and family, as to how they should act and behave. Often these expectations contradict their true feelings.

This production raises awareness and creates a conversation about how masculinity is shaped and formed amongst boys and men — too often in an unhealthy way — and how we as a community can change that.

As with all productions, Chain Reaction Theatre Project is partnering with local social services organizations to spark discussion and inspire community action around the issues central to the play.

CREATED and DIRECTED by Shelley Smith with many contributing writers.

  • Storytelling

Story Club Minneapolis is in its 6th year as Minneapolis’s only live monthly storytelling show featuring both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene (and beyond). The Story Club stage showcases autobiographical stories - especially those that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment... and especially voices that audiences might not get to hear in other contexts. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like we’ve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.

The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most famous and haunting stories to emerge from the 20th Century. The memoirs of this young Jewish girl, forced to hide for nearly two years to escape Nazi persecution, are an essential part of how we remember one of the darkest periods of our human history. Anne’s dynamism, her luminous spirit, and her story of resilience continue to resonate deeply, making her story as vital today as when her diary was first published. Adapted from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, edited by Otto Frank. Winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, Critics Circle Award, and virtually every other coveted theatre prize.

By Kate Hamill
Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Natalie Novacek

When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

Called an “unconditional delight” and “a bouncy, jaunty take on Austen” by the New York Times, this playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes and misfortunes of the Dashwood sisters—sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne—after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable.

Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense and Sensibility examines our reactions to societal pressures—both reasonable and ridiculous.

The story begins with a motionless tableau, the actors frozen in mid-action, their faces conjuring an ancient frieze. At the snap of fingers, the spell is broken and the statues spring to life. And so, this classic story of civil disobedience unfolds. Director Meagan Kedrowski adapts Sophocles’ timeless tragedy with help from the Ensembles. Kedrowski’s “thoughtful approach juxtaposes the rituals of fate and sacrifice against the wounded family dynamic at the heart of this play. The results are powerful.” (Star Tribune)

FEBRUARY 1st – MARCH 3rd, 2019

Allison and Jake have only just begun their new lives when a tragic accident changes everything. Trapped inside her own mind, Allison (Jessica Lind Peterson) hears the world around her, but the world cannot hear her. Julie (Norah Long), a recently divorced social worker and reluctant medium, attempts to convince Allison to hold on. Magic meets mundane as the unconscious mind collides with the reality of hospital life. As days turn to weeks, Jake (Zachary Stofer) loses hope of getting his wife back and both must decide whether to continue the fight, or to finally let each other go.
