The Maplewood Area Historical Society is on a mission to make its historic barn a professional summertime theatre venue. In July they embark on their third annual summer show, and this time it’s SISTERS OF SWING: The Story of the Andrews Sisters, written by Minnesota playwrights Beth Gilleland and Bob Beverage. The story follows Minnesota-born sisters LaVerne, Maxene and Patty Andrews as they began their recording career in the ‘30s, rose to stardom entertaining American GIs in WWII, and walked a winding path to success which gained them more top 10 hits than the Beatles. The show includes over 20 crowd-pleasing hit songs such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.” Joy Donley, the show’s director, is also part-time operations director for the Society. She is excited about creating space to interact with Minnesota history through theatre. “History is sometimes a hard-sell,” she says, “but theatre gives history breath and skin,” she says.

Added features at this event include:

  • Swing dances (including an instructor) after the Saturday night performances
  • An exhibition of Andrews Sisters memorabilia and World War II artifacts
  • USO “Stage Door Canteen”-inspired concessions
  • Audio-described performance on July 20th
  • Pre-show scavenger hunt and lawn games
  • Ticket discounts for young adults, ages 13-24

The cast features Haley Haupt (Patty), Sarah DeYong (Maxene), Claire Repp (LaVerne), Greg Eiden (Various roles including Bing Crosby), and Michael Pearce Donley (Vic Shoen). The band features Christopher Erickson (string bass), Adam Gauger (drums) and is led by Michael Pearce Donley (piano). The creative team includes Joy Donley (director), Michael Pearce Donley (musical director), Meg Zauner (choreographer), Diane Beal (costume design), Nathan Farley (set and props design) and Sarah D. Pierucki (lighting design and stage manager). Grace Dunavan is the stage hand and will be appearing as “Rosie the Riveter.” The show is written by Beth Gilleland and Bob Beverage, based on an idea by Ron Peluso, with musical arrangements and continuity by Raymond Berg.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Coriolanus is a great war general, but now it’s peacetime and he is persuaded to become a tribune and man of the people. But Coriolanus thinks the people are unworthy of a voice in their own government and treats them with contempt and rage. The power of self-governing is opposed to the power by the few. In addition, Coriolanus is too proud and stubborn to believe there might be a better way to solve things than by violence. This is one of the final tragedies by Shakespeare, and one of the least performed. It is also the most political play he ever wrote. (Tickets available at the ticket booth prior to performance/No reservation necessary).  Please bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic supper to the performance.

Theatre Coup d’Etat presents The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, directed by Rich Remedios, performing June 28 - July 20, 2019, all 7:30pm showings at SpringHouse Ministry Center in Minneapolis.

From Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Award-winning Martin McDonaugh, screen writer of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri., Seven Psychopaths, and In Bruges and playwright of The Beauty Queen of Lennane, Lonesome West, and The Lieutenant of Innishmore comes a darkly comedic masterpiece The Pillowman. In an interrogation room in an unnamed totalitarian dictatorship, Katurian Katurian, a writer, is being interrogated by two detectives. Next door waits Katurian’s brother with special needs, Michal. The detectives want to know why Katurian’s stories of gruesome plots about child murder and torture seem to mirror a string of recent child murders in the area.

Awarded the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play, the 2004-5, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play, and two Tony Awards, this brutal dark comedy poses unanswerable questions: How can art both offer hope and inspire unspeakable atrocities? Where is the line between truth and fairy tale? Is a life of horror worth living at all? Drawing on inspiration as diverse as Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Kafka, and Antonin Artaud, The Pillowman is a dark, twisty, and utterly unforgettable masterpiece from one of Ireland’s most treasured writers Martin McDonagh, the master of the horror-comedy.

Incorporating the use of shadow puppetry interacting with live actors, two-time Ivey Award-winning Theatre Coup d’Etat’s production of The Pillowman is a can’t-miss experience.

Featuring Paul LaNave & Wariboko Semenitari

Two brothers from two continents tied together with the same name.

Like a lot of brothers, Samuel J & Samuel K spend a lot of time on the basketball court. After a heated game of 1-on-1 to celebrate Samuel K’s college graduation, Samuel J gives his adopted brother two roundtrip plane tickets to his birth country in Cameroon. But Samuel K has no desire to face a place and a past that abandoned him. As the two leave their home in suburban Chicago, they find themselves on a transformative journey, forced to navigate a foreign culture and the complexities of brotherhood. Samuel J. and K. is a compelling, contemporary story about race, identity, home, and brotherhood.
