PIPPIN; a mid-life crisis, directed by Richard Hitchler, with choreography by Sandy Agustin, and musical direction by Jill Cronk Schendel.

As told by an ensemble of actors, PIPPIN is the fantastical story of a prince, who is searching for his purpose in life and his own “corner of the sky”. Encouraged by the Leading Player, Pippin dabbles in bloody battle, licentious entanglements, and savvy political maneuvers, only to discover that true happiness is more complicated than it appears. With infectious music by Stephen Schwartz and classic choreography from Bob Fosse, PIPPIN is both a humorous allegory and a dark tale of false appearances and empty promises.

Typically performed by angsty 20-something’s trying to find their way in the world, Theatre 55 is taking a different approach; a mid-life crisis. “After a certain age (roughly 50), we all go through this period of questioning - “What am I going to do with my life now?” “, says Richard Hitchler, founder and director. “This is an even more important question as we enter the second half of our lives. And we’re exploring what it means for people who have achieved a certain amount of prestige in the lives, but want to find true meaning and leave a legacy before they move on.” adds Hitchler.

"The musical performances are ravishing!" – Talkin' Broadway

"If you are an aficionado of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil, you will absolutely want to see When the Shark Bites. If you are not familiar with their work but appreciate thoughtful musical theater work with a sharp edge, I urge you to test their shark-infested waters.“ - Talkin' Broadway

"Listening to Bradley Greenwald sing, and speak, in German is one of my favorite things!” - Cherry and Spoon

"I must give an applause to Chronofon, for each of their voices were amazing. They varied slightly in styles but were able to come together and form something great.”  - Broadway World

The creators of Dear Lenny: Bernstein’s Life in Songs and Letters and ’66: Talkin ‘Bout My Generation, come back to the Dakota stage with When the Shark Bites, another multi-media theatrical concert hybrid infused with history, storytelling and sublimely beautiful music. When the Shark Bites tells the story of the brief collaboration between composer Kurt Weill (“Mack the Knife”) and playwright Bertolt Brecht and their largely uncredited co-writer, Elisabeth Hauptmann, which produced the Threepenny Opera, one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century.

Members:
Dan Chouinard (piano)
Diana Grasselli (vocals)
Bradley Greenwald (vocals)
Prudence Johnson (vocals)
Carolyn Boulay (violin)
Tim Sparks (banjo, guitar)

  • Songs like “Mack the Knife,” “Pirate Jenny,” “Alabama Song,” and “Surabaya Johnny.” Artists as varied as the Doors, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Nina Simone, Eric Dolphy and Marianne Faithful, not to mention Weill’s wife Lotte Lenya, have sunk their teeth into them, savoring Weill’s gorgeous melodies and Brecht’s meaty lyrics.
  • This timeless music was created for the Berlin theater during the Weimar Republic—the brief democratic period in Germany before the Nazis gained power. Audiences will leave with a deeper understanding of what compelled these artists to change theater, music and modern culture forever.
