Frank Theatre is thrilled to present two new short plays by Caryl Churchill, whose work Frank has presented many times in the company’s 30-year history. ESCAPED ALONE and HERE WE GO deliver an evening of theatre by perhaps the greatest living playwright.

Churchill’s sizzling work ESCAPED ALONE presents a 55-minute elliptical view of the apocalypse, fantasy intricately wired with politics. Four women in their 70s gather for tea in an English garden, combining small talk and the horrors of modern life. Their gossipy everyday conversations lay bare their psychological troubles — from depression to fear of cats, from an “accidentally” dead husband to agoraphobia — punctuated starkly with surreal apocalyptic monologues. Which world is real? How are they connected?

“It’s worth noting that simply writing a play featuring four women in their seventies without making it about their age is a reasonably subversive political act.” — The Atlantic

In the second piece, Churchill peers into the void with HERE WE GO, a poetic triptych of mortality. In the first scene, a group has gathered at a party after a funeral, remembering the man who has passed. In the second scene, a man observes the afterlife—Valhalla, Charon, and other mythical representations appear to him. But has he died? In the third wordless section, we see the intimate relationship between a frail man winding down his life with a caregiver.

“What Churchill has written is a striking memento mori for an age without faith; and although her play is brief, that in itself evokes the idea that we are here for a short time and then are suddenly gone.” — The Guardian

Caryl Churchill has written for the stage, television, and radio. A renowned and prolific playwright, her plays include Cloud NineTop GirlsFar AwayDrunk Enough to Say I Love You?BlissLove and InformationMad Forest, and A Number. In 2002, she received the Obie Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2010, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.

PIPPIN; a mid-life crisis, directed by Richard Hitchler, with choreography by Sandy Agustin, and musical direction by Jill Cronk Schendel.

As told by an ensemble of actors, PIPPIN is the fantastical story of a prince, who is searching for his purpose in life and his own “corner of the sky”. Encouraged by the Leading Player, Pippin dabbles in bloody battle, licentious entanglements, and savvy political maneuvers, only to discover that true happiness is more complicated than it appears. With infectious music by Stephen Schwartz and classic choreography from Bob Fosse, PIPPIN is both a humorous allegory and a dark tale of false appearances and empty promises.

Typically performed by angsty 20-something’s trying to find their way in the world, Theatre 55 is taking a different approach; a mid-life crisis. “After a certain age (roughly 50), we all go through this period of questioning - “What am I going to do with my life now?” “, says Richard Hitchler, founder and director. “This is an even more important question as we enter the second half of our lives. And we’re exploring what it means for people who have achieved a certain amount of prestige in the lives, but want to find true meaning and leave a legacy before they move on.” adds Hitchler.

About Theatre 55

A new adaptation of Mozart’s opera, La Clemenza di Tito, with high stakes sports drama, natural disasters, and ‘80s new wave music!

In this adaptation of Mozart’s opera, a rag-tag group of players is resurrecting a defunct tennis club. But backstabbing, bitterness, and a murderous revenge plot threaten their rise to the top of Rome’s championship match. Will they find redemption before Mount Vesuvius covers them in ash? When can cheaters be forgiven? All is presented with the Picnic Operetta’s trademark style of playfulness, satire, and hope. Classic arias and duets from Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito soar across the garden alongside new wave and synth-pop hits by Devo, Berlin, Yaz, and Pat Benatar. Our operatic athletes will serve the audience some fresh edible bites as well.

Celebrating its 11th season, Mixed Precipitation brings an edible opera adventure to parks, farms, and gardens throughout MN in August and September.

ESCAPED ALONE presents a 55-minute elliptical view of the apocalypse, fantasy intricately wired with politics. Four women in their 70s gather for tea in an English garden, combining small talk and the everyday anxieties of contemporary life, juxtaposed to the cataclysmic possibilities that teeter on our response to dire warnings of climate change and environmental devastation.Their gossipy everyday conversations lay bare their psychological troubles — from depression to fear of cats, from an “accidentally” dead husband to agoraphobia — punctuated starkly with surreal apocalyptic monologues. Which world is real? How are they connected?

Churchill peers into the void with HERE WE GO, a poetic triptych of mortality. She presents, in reverse order, a man nearing the end of life, his view from the threshold of the afterlife, and the reminiscences at his funeral.

And yet, reviews repeatedly refer to these plays as Churchill’s funniest work yet!

Cast features Maria Asp, Charla Marie Bailey, Patrick Bailey Barbra Berlovitz, Cheryl Willis, Janis Hardy. Production team: Director, Wendy Knox; Set Design by Joe Stanley; Costume Design by Kathy Kohl; Lighting Design by Mike Wangen; Sound design by Dan Dukich; Stage Managed by Glenn Klapperich.

Arab-American twins come out as gay to mom and turn

the hilarious and touching story into a raucous comedy

Pray The Gay Away, a true life story,

plays in Minneapolis September 12 - 22

Some moms cry. Some moms give hugs. When the Zakar Twins’ uber-Christian mom learned that both her sons are gay, she threw holy water at them and began quoting Leviticus. The Instagram models turned their hilarious and unique story into a best-selling book and now a stage play, Pray The Gay Away, appearing at the Cowles Center in Minneapolis from September 12 - 22. Tickets are available at www.zakartwins.com

The true-life coming out comedy chronicles 26-year old Michael and Zach as they face awkward sexual encounters, coming out to each other, and their biggest foe – Mom, a woman who not only gave birth to what she calls one regret – but two. The hilariously and poignant play shows what it’s like growing up as gay, Iraqi-American twins in post 9/11 America. Pray the Gay Away was inspired the night Mom snuck into their bedroom and force fed them “holy grapes,” determined to “de-gay” them.

The Zakar twins are leaders in the LGBT community where they blaze a path for queer people who come from Near and Middle Eastern cultures. Their high internet profile led to an appearance on the 2018 season premiere of Tosh.O and the publication of their memoir, an Amazon #1 bestseller.

“It was confusing for our Mom,” Zach said, “in Iraq, being gay isn’t something that you discuss openly. She was worried about how the community would talk about us in a negative light. It was difficult to see her take it so hard, she basically cried and prayed for 90 percent of our coming out process.”

The show, directed by Eric Swanson and produced by Murray and Peter Present, is written by Bobby Brower and the Zakar twins, explores the awkwardness of coming of age as well as a touching testimonial to the love of family and religion.

“Our mom would shove religion down our throats,” Zach joked. “But honestly, we are who we are because of our upbringing. The message of Christianity – and any religion – is acceptance and love for all.”
