September 27 thru October 27, 2019

MORE INFORMATION

Lyrics by Joe Troiano
Music composed and arranged by Jeffrey Zahn

OUR FOUR-SIDED FRIEND RETURNS!
ALL AGES
Spookley the Square Pumpkin sprouts up this autumn in our JC Studio! When Spookley arrives in the pumpkin patch, he is teased by all the other pumpkins because of his odd shape. Even after his new friends—the boisterous spiders Edgar, Allen and Poe—try to convince him to run for the Pick of the Patch contest, Spookley still isn’t sure he has what it takes. However, a threatening storm may just give Spookley the inspiration to discover his own worth. This imaginative puppetry extravaganza filled with memorable music returns this fall to encourage everyone to “dare to be square!”

Internationally acclaimed theatre artists, Ping Chong and UMTAD Assistant Professor Talvin Wilks will create the fourth iteration of  Collidescope: Adventures in Pre and Post Racial America  in collaboration with University of Minnesota undergraduate and graduate students.  Originally conceived in 2014 as a response to the unjust murder of Trayvon Martin, the debate around Stand Your Ground Laws and the seemingly perpetual police violence against members of the African American community, Collidescope offers a collision course view of the legacy behind the history of racial violence, racism and social injustice in America. As seen through the gaze of an intergalactic time traveler, the investigation of this peculiar “nature” moves back and forth in historical time, specifically with a focus on the American psyche represented by contemplations of noted historical and contemporary writers and political figures. Utilizing archival documents and source texts, fictional and non-fictional, Collidescope engages the audience in a discourse interrogating the motives and justifications behind this legacy.  This fourth installment will inject unique events from Minnesota’s history into the greater picture of race, racism and citizenship, to connect the dots between America’s troubled racial history and its ongoing consequences.

“With this new reimagining of Swan Lake, [Michael Keegan-Dolan] elevates it to a place of bleak, funny and astoundingly poetic beauty.” —The Guardian (UK)

In this gorgeous, large-scale contemporary adaptation of the famous story ballet Swan Lake, the lake is black plastic, the prince is suicidal, the swans wear convent frocks, and the set is an assemblage of concrete and steel. From the imagination of Michael Keegan-Dolan, one of Ireland’s foremost dance-theater makers, comes a world of magical realism with a beauty as fierce and rugged as the land itself. Ancient Irish mythology meets modern Ireland head-on in a performance laced with comic vignettes and raw, exquisite movement. The piece has become an international hit since its sold-out premiere at the Dublin Theatre Festival. This rare US presentation includes an emotionally textured Nordic- and Celtic-infused score, performed live by Dublin’s Slow Moving Clouds.

Contains gun shots, references to suicide, and depictions of physical and sexual violence.
Program length: 75 minutes.

-UNKNOWN-
Written by Alexis Clements
Directed by Mariah Larkin
World Premiere

Nobody knows Sydney Anders. So nobody paid much attention when Sydney’s seven boxes arrived at the Archives. Nobody, except for Sophie and Thea. Flipping through the pages of Sydney’s life in an idiosyncratic archive of lesbian lives, Sophie and Thea uncover the tragedies and celebrations of an unknown life, and along the way uncover unknown truths about each other and themselves.

Inspired by the 45 year-old Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn, NY, Unknown offers a portrait of a small community of lesbians that spans four generations, and it asks how we come to know a person as something more than the role they play in our lives or the labels society applies to them.

The Edge Between is an evening of stories and reflections exploring Matt Guidry’s paradoxical journey, simultaneously normal and unique, of raising a child with significant disabilities. Through lyrical storytelling, music, movement, and projected imagery, Matt takes us along to that place in life where we have a foot in two worlds. It’s a story that lives at the intersection of perception and perspective, where it’s always a matter of finding balance.

The narratives in our community about disability are too often ones of struggle and hardship tinged with pity, or are about the hero overcoming obstacles. The truth, however, is that my child is just a child (now a young man), and our life together is rich, joyful, complex, sometimes boring, and sometimes hard. There are struggles and obstacles, but those facts don’t define the story. We are all more than one story.

Collaborating with Open Eye favorites Maren Ward (Director) and Kevin Kling (Creative Adviser), Matt brings three decades in the Twin Cities as performer, director, choreographer, teaching artist, parent, and disability advocate to culmination in this evening of extremely personal storytelling.

  • Drama

Wayward Theatre Company is committed to bringing work outside of traditional theatre settings, allowing audiences to engage with texts and spaces in new and exciting ways. Next up on Wayward’s site-specific docket is Shakespeare’s brilliant tragedy; Macbeth, playing at the historic James J. Hill House.

As a follow-up to our extended, sold-out run of Hamlet in the spring of 2018, Macbeth will be the company’s most ambitious endeavor to date. Working side by side in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society, Wayward will utilize this historic landmark in ways patrons of the arts and of the Hill House have yet to experience.

Macbeth, considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, brings audiences deep into the minds of an ambitious couple, hellbent on power and position. A supernatural prophecy calls a would-be king and queen to action and as they work to realize their greatest dreams, their world turns suddenly into a living nightmare.

NOTE: There are staggered start times of 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM for this production.
