The Performance Collective, located at cfpa, is excited to welcome Keith Hennessy to the Twin Cities for a movement workshop, January 31st-Feb 1st, 2020.

Dancing Magic Together, a.k.a. responding to the material and psychological terrorism of neoliberal capital during a political era of intensified polarization with rigorously playful approaches to shared dancing, ritual, healing, and performance.

Intuition. Synchronicity. Logic. Queer logic. Decolonial practices that increase our listening and reject stress. Play and science.  Participants will explore the poetics, politics, and potentials of creating a shared world by dancing together. How can bodies and imaginations be decolonized and healed? How can dancing respond to anxiety and trauma? How do we develop tools for non verbal and improvised negotiations of consent and collaboration? More about the workshop here.

This workshop is part of The Performance Collective’s ReClaim series, which explores the vitality and evolution of American identity, and the ways in which creative works reflect our lived experience (or not). We engage fiercely with the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience, and we assemble for lively questions, dynamic conversation, and new understanding.

The Performance Collective is fiscally-sponsored through Springboard for the Arts‘ Incubator Program. All income from this workshop supports the work of local performing artists through residencies, public presentations, and workshops from nationally-recognized performance-based artists.

“Just make a dot and see where it takes you.” When Vashti’s teacher asks her to draw a picture, Vashti insists she’s not an artist and makes an angry dot to prove her point. But when Vashti’s teacher frames her dot and hangs it up, Vashti is sent on a surprising journey of self-discovery. This charming fable about the power of the creative spirit comes to life through music and dance this winter with our continuing collaboration with Escalate Dance.

A conceptually adventurous exploration of place, identity and mythology, Jogging is gloriously unpredictable and presents a radical challenge to the stereotypes and prejudices that afflict global perceptions of Arab women. The story is told through the eyes of Hajj Ali on her daily jogging route through Beirut, Lebanon. She starts taking notes and begins to see the streets of her city with new eyes. As she jogs, she considers the city’s history of building and destruction through war and thinks about her roles as a woman, wife and mother. She examines her dreams and desires. And she thinks about Medea.

Jogging is performed in Arabic with English subtitles.

“[Back to Back Theatre] have never let the fact that their performers have a range of physical and intellectual disabilities define, or indeed, confine them from pushing and transforming our expectations of what theatre can be. Long may they continue to do shows.” —Time Out Melbourne

Interrogating the parameters of traditional theater and their own perceived disabilities, the five performers in Back to Back Theatre challenge contemporary presumptions about artificial intelligence and the human mind. With this unapologetic and piercingly fresh new work, Australia’s leading independent theater company returns to the Walker for the third time. Miscommunication, mistakes, and misunderstandings abound as a group of activists holds a public meeting for a frank discussion about a history we would prefer not to know and a future that is ambivalent. Storytelling, design, light, and sound thread through the mayhem, until clarity emerges amid community.

Contains mature content.
