A SteppingStone Theatre for Youth World Premiere!

by Ricardo Gamboa

Jimmy is just like every other boy on the block—except he can move things with his mind. It’s a power he hopes can make him rich, famous. So when his mom, who came to Chicago without proper documentation, lets him join little league, Jimmy performs miracles. Pretty soon, people are talking about him as much as they are about the disappearances plaguing the community. But, on his 13th birthday, when his mother also goes missing, Jimmy must learn to use his powers for something else besides cosmic home runs. He teams up with two super-powered siblings who have been avoiding living in shelters to rescue his mom, the other “disappeareds”, and discover who is behind the kidnappings.

Creative visions may be larger than life. But, it's amazing what we can achieve if we are persistent and do something small today, and tomorrow, the next day, and the next.

Sparkle Theatricals is now heading up the Twin Cities hub of NACHMO (National Choreography Month). NACHMO was founded 11 years ago in New York City. This is its official, inaugural year in the Twin Cities.

The January Challenge, which was recently featured in the January 2020 issue of Dance Magazine, is the foundation of all that is NACHMO.

It inspires dancers, choreographers, and movement enthusiasts to choreograph by providing a month-long deadline to complete their work and connect it to a community of peers.

Each day of January 2020, @nachmodance has posted a prompt on Instagram. The prompts are designed to help NACHMO participants generate material and vanquish creative blocks. For the first month of the year, participants have put aside excuses, hesitations, and perhaps day jobs to work intensely on making dance. Through the online community of fellow NACHMO participants, social media, the blog, and live events, individual artists they've also had the opportunity to network and collaborate.

Wonder what a 31-day choreographic challenge might produce? Looking for a fun night out in the name of radical creativity?

The Inaugural NACHMO Twin Cities Show will be held on Sunday, February 9th at 6:30 pm at the Art Box in Minneapolis, thanks to major support from Off-Leash Area.

At the showing, NACHMO artists will present their January Challenge creations. Tickets are $5. (There is no cost for NACHMO artists to show their work. Professional production photos and archival video of the entire event will be taken and NACHMO artists have will access to photos and footage of their choreography at no cost. The cost of admission will help offset these expenses).

The Art Box is located at 4200 E 54th St, Minneapolis, MN 55417.
