“We’re all of us meant to be heroes”. Join us for the regional premiere of playwright Keith Bunin’s unforgettable tale of adventure, love, loss and redemption. Drawing on a vast array of influences from the Bible, to The Odyssey, to Shakespeare, The World Over masterfully speaks to the original beauty and goodness of the human person, while showing just how far we’ve fallen. At once wholly fantastical and profoundly truthful, Bunin never leaves us without humor or hope in this epic story of a man in search of his home. Adam believes he is the lost prince of Gildoray, but nobody else in the world believes that Gildoray even exists. Adam will journey the world over, battling monsters, enduring shipwrecks, and daring deeds of heroism, to search for his lost kingdom and save his people.

By Oscar Wilde
Directed by Susan V. Hansen

The Importance of Being Earnest has proven to be Oscar Wilde’s most enduring—and endearing—play. Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. Filled with witty Victorian aphorisms and Wilde’s own brand of wisdom, The Importance of Being Earnest remains one of theatre’s most popular comedies. Rating: Some material may not be suitable for young children.

Theatre Pro Rata is partnering with The Bell Museum, Minnesota’s official natural history museum, to present Silent Sky inside the Whitney and Elizabeth MacMillan Planetarium. Written by Lauren Gunderson, Silent Sky takes place in the early twentieth century, when Henrietta Leavitt and a group of women “computers” pursued astronomical research at the Harvard Observatory under the supervision of a male scientist. Their work proved to be crucial to the development of the field. Henrietta herself had to balance her dedication to her work with the demands of her family, health challenges, and the possibility of personal relationships. The achievements and difficulties of a woman scientist in a challenging historical period combine in this thought-provoking and engaging play. Come listen to the music of the spheres!

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove

by Jane Chambers

Produced by Century Playhouse

“Funny” “Groundbreaking” “Honest and Moving”

With Ellen DeGeneres, Lilly Tomlin, Jane Wagner, Harriet Newman Leve, and Portia de Rossi bringing Chambers' play, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, to Broadway for the very first time later in this 2020 year (it originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1980), where it will be directed by Cynthia Nixon, this will be a play everyone is talking about!

Before it premieres on Broadway, come see Century Playhouse's wonderful production of this amazing play and you will understand why these magnificent, respected, and extremely talented women believe that Chambers' play (forty years after it was written) still needs and deserves to shine with the lights of Broadway for all to see.

Last Summer at Bluefish Coveis the story of a young dissatisfied straight woman who leaves her husband to spend some quiet time by herself, and who unwittingly and naively wanders into the midst of a group of seven lesbians at the beginning of their annual beachside vacation. The friendships, the laughter, the love, the fears of being outed, the difficulties of being gay and how it affects relationships with family, children, parents and careers, the demonstrations of what the painful price could be for a gay life in 1980s America, had never before been told with such respect.

Chambers' comedic dialogue, sensitivity to human nature and tender treatment of her characters help the play transcend preconceptions and show the universality of these women's journeys. (Goodreads)

This landmark play is an emotional, funny, feel-good, and heart-wrenching story that speaks universally to audiences of all genders, identities, and lifestyles in a wonderful, entertaining, and insightful fashion.

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is broadly considered to be one of the greatest scripts of its genre. With a cast of eight magnificently talented actors from throughout the Twin Cities theatre community, Century Playhouse is thrilled to be producing this important, all-female cast play staged in an intimate setting with the audience physically close to the action of the play. Seating is limited.

The University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts & Dance presents the following play:

“The Skriker” blends English and Irish folktales with a non-linear structure to tell the story of an ancient fairy pursuing two young women in 20th century London. Whilst speaking English in her human manifestations, the Skriker forms a language all her own consisting of fragmented wordplay and twisted classic tales. Written in 1994 by the critically-acclaimed playwright Caryl Churchill, this increasingly relevant blend of magical realism and horror speaks to our current climate state. The Skriker is a stunningly imaginative play about the consequences humans must face when we exploit the natural world.

In Euripides’ tale of hubris and tyranny, a disguised Dionysus descends on the city of Thebes to prove Zeus is his father and settle a score with his mortal adversary King Pentheus. His attempts to tear the people’s loyalties away from the king cause a frenzy of emotion that lands Dionysus in prison. But Pentheus’ misguided attempt to suppress the god’s influence tests his leadership and threatens to bring his family to ruin. With striking visuals and bewitching beauty, legendary director Anne Bogart gives this ancient tale a modern, razor-sharp edge.

Is it a comedy? A drama? An American fable? Well, it’s all of that — and more — because it’s a look into the unique mind of Hertel Daggett, a recluse who lives in a junk pile and talks to dead animals as the owner of an abandoned pet cemetery. But his monologues and philosophical musings are interrupted when a smarmy realtor uses Hertel’s ex-wife and long-lost mother in a plot to develop his beloved cemetery into a shopping mall.
