When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top Forty score, augmented with dynamic new songs, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and open mind.

Footloose first burst onto the silver screen in 1984 and proved to be one of the year’s most successful motion pictures. The soundtrack recording reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and went on to sell over 17 million copies worldwide, generating such Top Forty hits as its title song and “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” (both of which received Academy Award nominations), plus “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out For A Hero,” and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man).” With a screenplay and lyrics by Oscar winner Dean Pitchford, the story focused on young people, much like his previous, and wildly successful movie musical Fame.

Join us at Orono High School Theatre for Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea."

“Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today — but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.”
– Isaac Asimov, My Own View

Have you ever imagined a world whose laws of physics differed from our own? Welcome to the country's only recurring open-mic dedicated to speculative fiction: fantasy, sci-fi, or supernatural horror! Shows from the 2022 Minnesota Fringe Festival will present some of their material.

WARNING: while we appreciate the importance of safe spaces, we also appreciate the importance of unsafe spaces, in which writers can experiment with edgier material. None of the stories are screened, and performers may present adult content. We’re free-speech absolutists, and recognize that that occasionally comes at an uncomfortable price.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Strike Theater requires proof of vaccination and masking for entry to all shows.

Growing poetry and storytelling one word at a time, Word Sprout is based in Minneapolis and specializes in producing and capturing Live Literature at its finest. We are committed to providing both open forums and curated stages for people to embrace and share the words that are most important to them in storytelling, poetry, and genre bending verbal explosions.

PRAISE FOR THE NOT-SO-SILENT PLANET

"It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that ultra-hip MPLS + STPL has an open mic night dedicated to...sci-fi, fantasy, tales of the supernatural and such. It also shouldn’t be a surprise that the quality of the material is higher than an H.G. Wells zeppelin."
- Hitara, Secrets of the City

"...that was some delightfully trippy shit...mind-bendingly strange and fun...they burrow into your mind and keep you thinking about them long after they're done."
-
Matthew Everett, Single White Fringe Geek

"...definitely in the grand tradition of short-story writing in the genre...if you like story-telling events, don't miss this one. Seriously. Just...don't."
"I love audio books. I love science fiction and fantasy stories. I love really good storytellers. I loved this show."
"...helps you to see that there are many possibilities in this vast universe of ours."
- five-star audience reviews (from the Minnesota Fringe Festival)
