Matilda: The Musical JR.

Book by: Dennis Kelly

Music and Lyrics by: Tim Minchin

Directed by: Maureen O'Malley

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Roald Dahl's Matilda: The Musical JR. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

The shows runs 90 minutes with an intermission and is appropriate for all ages.

1986. The story of the indomitable Dorothy Molter, the last legal non-indigenous resident of the Boundary Waters. The story reflects the beauty and hardships of Molter’s solitary yet satisfying life beginning in 1934. The play, funny and passionate, explores her independence, fortitude, and love of nature. and pushes back against the premise that her time in the North Woods made her the “Loneliest Woman in America,” as the Saturday Evening Post claimed in 1952.  Dorothy Molter’s story will delight all, young and old.

The 2012 revised version of Godspell is a masterful retelling of the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden); and it took the world by storm.  Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”

A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of community, connection, kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

Performances will be 2/17/23-2/19/23 and 2/24/23-2/26/23 at King of Kings Lutheran Church.

Local beloved celebrities, Nancy Nelson and Don Shelby, have been invited to pair up in a poignant theatre collaboration to present A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated work, which ran successfully on Broadway and throughout the country in a timeless piece directed by Chanhassen Resident Artistic Director, Michael Brindisi.  There are ONLY eight performances to enjoy in Chanhassen’s intimate Playhouse Theatre, so seating is limited.

Don and Nancy will play Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale law school, and Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate.  Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children.  Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them.  However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave, to each other over the years—physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.
