This October, Freshwater Theatre is proud to present the next installment in its Ivey award winning short play festival series, The Feminine Surcharge, to run in rep with our main stage production, Preferred by Discreet Women Everywhere, by Ruth Virkus.
With this production, Freshwater Theatre is looking to further examine the tremendous cost of presenting as feminine in our current society.
We are looking for local female-identifying actors, storytellers and musicians to share their experiences with the various financial burdens of being femme. Anything from the tampon tax to elective surgery is fair game.
The show will run on 4 nights, featuring 4-5 pieces in total. We are looking for artist-led pieces, simple in production, to be easily performed on the bathroom set from Preferred by Discreet Women Everywhere. The pieces should be no longer than 20 minutes in length. Performers selected will receive all box office profits from the performances, equally divided. A stipend of at least $75 is guaranteed.
We are are seeking storytelling pieces and scenes with no more than two people; this time we are prioritizing personal experiences/spoken word over short form plays. However, you do not have to perform your own piece if you do not wish; please email [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
We will have one group rehearsal two weeks from opening, with a paper tech with the artists and tech staff, and a 5 hour tech rehearsal on October 13. The Feminine Surcharge will open the evening of October 14, with three more performances the evenings of October 15, 19, 21 and 22.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions; all inquiries and play submissions should be directed to: [email protected]. Submissions are due by September 1, 2018.
