Theatre Mission, Overview and Programming

Park Square opened in 1975 and has grown to become the largest mid-sized theatre in Minnesota. The work on our two stages (350-seat proscenium; 200-seat thrust) attracts this market’s third largest subscriber base as well as a school audience of 30,000 teens (representing 1 in every 15 Minnesota 7th-12th grade students). In 2020, Steppingstone Theatre for Youth entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Park Square, which will lead to a new, merged organization serving an audience of 100,000 and engaging audiences and participants from across generations.

Park Square and SteppingStone play a leading role as a local producer of new work by living writers including world premiere commissions and important second productions of work in development. We have grown into one of Minnesota’s top employers of local stage talent. We have a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. We work with AEA (SPT6-10 and TYA), Stage Directors & Choreographers Society (SDC) and the Twin Cities Musicians Union for traditional musicals.

We recognize that this goal is difficult and requires ongoing action, education, and shifting of organizational culture, practices and policies.
