Job Title: Costume Assistant

Report to: Production Manager and Contracted Costume Designers

Hours per week: Part Time, flexible

Salary: $20/hr

Location: History Theatre in downtown St. Paul

The Costume Assistant is a part-time seasonal position that will assist History Theatre Costume Designers in the creation of costumes, hair & make-up as needed for a 5-show season. Beginning with the first day of rehearsals for each production, and continuing through load-in, tech rehearsals and strike. Each production would be approximately 120 – 150 hours, schedule to be worked out with the Costume Designer and Production Manager.

Duties Include:

  • Costume construction; including stitching, draping, patterning, cutting, and costume crafts
  • Fittings, alterations, and repairs
  • Shopping
  • Loading costumes into the theater
  • Managing the costume areas/dressing rooms
  • Working with each designer to manage the costume budget for each production
  • Attending Production Meetings
  • Help each designer to pull pieces for PR and Marketing photo shoots
  • Attending technical rehearsals and previews
  • Helping each designer with final strike of costumes, including separating out dry cleaning and setting up dry cleaning pick-up and delivery
  • Assisting each designer with returns
  • Order supplies as needed
  • Along with each designer, put together paperwork for the run of each show, including piece lists, care instructions, and costume change plots
  • Act as show dresser if needed.
  • Laundry and wardrobe maintenance during the run of each production
  • Keep costume area supplied and organized.
  • Good knowledge of theatrical costuming and a base knowledge of theatrical wigs, including styling and maintenance
  • Excellent sewing skills
  • Ability to respond to designer requests and to implement a costume design.
  • Other duties as agreed upon with each visiting designer and Production Manager

Competitive pay and benefits package include:

  •  Position to begin mid-August, 2022
  • $20/hr
  • Optional: HT contributes 50% of parking costs in downtown St. Paul ramp
  •  4 Complimentary tickets to each production worked on.

Founded in 1978, History Theatre is the only theatre dedicated to preserving the history of Minnesota and the Midwest through quality theatrical productions staged in our 575-seat theatre.
