Atacama, by Augusto Amador, is set in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The play begins with the meeting of two mysterious people in the desert, a woman and man, both late middle-aged and apparently strangers. They have each come to dig in search of the bones of their lost adult children, who were among those “disappeared” by the General Pinochet regime in the 1970s after the military coup that overthrew the Salvador Allende democratic government. The “disappeared” were thousands of Chilean citizens who were accused of being Communists and who were tortured and killed, then buried in the Atacama Desert. The play takes the audience on an extraordinary and unexpected journey as the painful and complicated past lives of these two characters slowly unfold. Atacama is a searing exploration of universal and powerful issues of social justice, gender equality, and intergenerational divides. The characters gradually enter a multilayered world of magical realism, where each can begin to find a path leading from memories of extreme national and family transgression, to human possibilities of remorse, reparation, and redemption. The play grapples with political forces that tear families and countries apart because of opposing views, choices, and actions—all so painfully relevant to the world today.
Two roles to be cast:
Ignacia: (50’s to 60’s) Chilean mother victimized by the Pinochet regime and whose son was “disappeared” and buried in the Atacama Desert.
Diego: (50’s to 60’s) Chilean father whose daughter was “disappeared” by the Pinochet regime and buried in the Atacama Desert.
