Human Combat Chess is back, and bigger than ever!

Human Combat Chess is back and bigger than ever! Come join the Twin Cities’ best stage fighters and choreographers as we #AssumeTheBoard in 2019!

What is Human Combat Chess? Glad you asked! Human Combat Chess is the best sport to never exist and the next big thing in sports entertainment. Audiences are presented with a chess board measuring almost 30 feet across, filled with fighters from a fictional sports league. Pieces are given orders by their team’s King, and then fight when a square is contested. While the show is presented as though all of this action is happening spontaneously, every single move is choreographed.

This year marks a significant step forward in our journey. In years past we have presented the league’s Championship or All-Star Game, but this year we’ll bring our audience in to see the Semi-Finals as well as the exciting Championship Final match. That’s right, we’ll be fielding 4 teams of fighters this season, with more fights than ever before. This means we need people of all shapes, sizes, race, and gender identity to show what a diverse group of fighters can really do!

Our auditions will be split across two weekends, with a community kick off event on Friday December 14th. This kick off event will feature a host of cast members from the past and future coming together to celebrate the exciting new steps our show is taking.

Community Kick Off Date and Time:

Friday December 14th from 7 to 10 PM, at Christ Church Lutheran, 3244 34th Avenue South. Come join us to learn more about who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

Audition Dates and Times:

Saturday, December 15th, 1:30pm - 7:30pm

Sunday, December 16th, 1:30pm - 7:30pm

Friday, January 4th, 6:30pm - 10:30pm

Saturday January 5th, 1:30pm - 7:30pm

Sunday, January 6th, 1:30pm - 7:30pm

We will be holding auditions in two different locations, in South and Northeast Minneapolis. To avoid confusion, for specific location details please email [email protected].

Rehearsals begin March 18th and run through June 6th

Performers will attend 2-3 rehearsals per week, on weekday evenings or Saturday afternoons. Rehearsals will be a Large Cast rehearsal once/week, the rest being stage combat training and fight rehearsals. The first two weeks will be for all performers. Flexible schedules are possible! Some stage combat training for all participants.

Show Dates:

All of our cast performs the weekends of June 7th-June 16th, in the Semi-Finals show

Half of our cast also performs the weekends of June 21st-June 30th, for the Championship show

Two (predetermined) teams of actors cast will be in all four weekends of performances, two teams will only be seen in the Semi-Finals.

If you are unable to commit to all four show weekends, please let us know at auditions so we can cast teams accordingly- it is NOT an automatic nonstarter.

Here are the details for auditions:

We have 70 roles available for people of all shapes, sizes, races, and gender identities. Women and POCI especially encouraged to audition. No experience necessary, though Stage Combat training or other movement experience is a plus.

No advance preparation required. Auditions will consist of a conversation and a very friendly, low key fight audition to get a sense for your movement abilities. You will have a sword in your hand. It’s a good time. Due to the need to gauge an auditioner’s ability to learn stage combat, audition times may run longer than normal.

There will be a $50 stipend for all performers.

To reserve an audition slot, or if you have any questions, please email [email protected].

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
