Acting Apprentice

Founded in 1989, the Commonweal Theatre opened an  intimate, 200-seat, three-quarter round thrust stage in 2007. Located in historic Lanesboro in the heart of Southeastern Minnesota's bluff country (approx. two hours south of Minneapolis/St. Paul), the Commonweal boasts a rare organizational model of artist/administrator, where artists fulfill the day-to-day artistic and operational needs of the company.

Season runs from March through December – with 5-6 shows/week. The 2023 season is: Bernhardt/Hamlet, Deathtrap, Women in Jeopardy, Jekyll & Hyde, and the musical She Loves Me. The season runs in a rotating repertory schedule.

Apprentices are cast in mainstage productions and assigned designing, understudying, assistant directing and/or stage managing duties. Administratively, apprentices work alongside company members on the Marketing, Development and Production teams. Because of the rare artist/administrator model, Commonweal apprentices experience the full scope of running a theatre company. This work thoroughly prepares them for life as theatre artists in a way unlike most other artistic apprenticeships.

Stipend is $100/week. In addition to compensation, housing is provided at an artist's residence two blocks from the theatre. Other benefits include free laundry, internet access, cable, and parking.

Responsibilities:

• Perform, design, or stage management as assigned

• Perform and produce the 2023 Apprentice Capstone Project as an apprentice company member

• Attend weekly team meetings for the Marketing, Development, and Production teams
