Music Director | Bright Star | Northfield Arts Guild

Northfield Arts Guild Theater is seeking a Music Director for their March 2022 production of Bright Star. The music director will oversee all music related aspects of the show, including auditions, rehearsals with the cast, and directing the pit orchestra.

Our consistent expectation for the quality of theatrical productions at the Northfield Arts Guild is high, but our primary objective is to provide a creative outlet that is enjoyable for everyone involved. We realize that our production team members volunteer more time and energy than we could ever fully compensate. The stipend for Music Director is $500-700 depending on experience, with an additional $400-550 for acting as both rehearsal accompanist and playing piano with the pit.

Show Dates: March 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00, Sundays at 2:00. Tech week will run the week leading up to opening night (Feb. 28- March 3). Auditions will take place November 7 and 8.

Rehearsals: The Music Director is responsible for rehearsing all show music with the cast. It is preferred (but not required) that the music director act as rehearsal accompanist as well, and there is an additional stipend for this added responsibility. Rehearsals will be Sundays - Thursdays, at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater, Northfield, MN. Rehearsals start January 9 and culminate with tech week, Feb. 28-March 3. The weekly rehearsal schedule will be determined by collaboration between the Music Director and Artistic Director.

Pit Orchestra: The Music Director is responsible for recruiting the pit orchestra according to the show needs, along with scheduling and leading rehearsals. The Music Director acts as the go-between for members of the pit orchestra and the rest of the production staff. The Music Director and the pit orchestra MUST be present during Tech Week rehearsals, and for every performance of the show (see “Show Dates” above).

Performances: The Music Director is responsible for directing the pit orchestra during tech week and at all performances. If the music director is acting as rehearsal accompanist, they will be playing the piano part in the pit orchestra.

Covid-19 precautions: At the time of this posting (Spt. 20, 2021), the Northfield Arts Guild is requiring proof of vaccination against the Covid-19 virus for all participants, audience members, and production staff. Masks are required for all large gatherings or times when social distancing is not possible. We are closely watching CDC recommendations, and reserve the right to change any of these policies at any time.

To Apply: Please send a statement of interest to Anna@NorthfieldArtsGuild.org by October 20. Include your experience as music director and examples of shows you have worked on, as well as 1-2 references (email addresses please).
