New! Youth Programming at the Guthrie

Our classes for Grades 6 - 12 are designed to empower youth to be artists and lifelong learners while exposing them to the professional practices and community of the Guthrie Theater.   • Acting for the Stage (Grades 6 – 8) | Sundays, October 27 - November 17, 10:30 – 12:30 p.m.

Develop skills for on and off the stage in this intro level acting class at the Guthrie! Through a focus on ensemble building, improvisation and character development, students will build a foundation of acting to take them to the stage and beyond.

  • The Actor’s Toolkit (Grades 9 – 12) | Sundays, October 27 – November 17, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Working with a professional theater artist, this class will focus on developing a young actor’s foundational practice by focusing on voice, movement and scene study and expose them to the professional practices of the Guthrie Theater.

  • Stage Management 101 (Open to grades 9 – 12) | Sundays, November 3 – 24, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Learn the in’s and the outs of the role that keeps the production together: the stage manager! This 4 session long stage management workshop will share best practices, techniques and protocols to take back to your school and community productions.

  • Introduction to Musical Theater Singing (Grades 7-12) | Sundays, November 3 - 24, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

In this intro level singing class, students will get to know their voice and develop a vocal technique through an exploration of up-tempo songs and ballads from Through exploring up-tempo songs and ballads that can be used for auditioning, the class will discover techniques for breath support, song interpretation and performance.

  • Workshop: Acting Through Song (Grades 10 -12) | Saturday, December 7, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.  

This one-day workshop will focus on connecting movement and voice to the emotional arc of a character through song. The class will focus on an audition size cut from popular musical theater ballads and break down the text and music learning techniques to form fully developed characters and effectively communicate the story through song.

  • Workshop: Monologues (Grades 7 – 12) | Saturday and Sunday, December 14 – 15, 10:00 – 12:30 p.m.

Learn the skills to become audition ready with this 2-day monologue workshop! Students are asked to come with one, 2-minute monologue of their choosing (this can be any style either dramatic, comedic, classic or contemporary). The workshop will explore a variety of tools and strategies to bring the monologue to life and create an engaging and fun performance you will want to repeat over and over again!
