Rosetown Playhouse seeks Production Staff for Disney's Newsies!

Rosetown Playhouse is seeking to hire key production staff for its 2019 summer production, DISNEY'S NEWSIES. Dedicated to building community & creating theater, this will be Rosetown's 20th season making quality productions. Ideal staff will be "outside the box" thinkers who are good collaborators and are also willing to work with LARGE groups of people. The average cast size for our summer show is 80-115 people.

IMPORTANT DATES

Performance dates are July 5-7 and 11-14 at the beautiful Como Pavilion in St Paul. Auditions will be held in early- to mid-May and rehearsals will begin in mid- to late-May. Rehearsals will be held at Roseville Area Middle School. Dates will be confirmed with staff prior to interviews.

OPEN POSITIONS

  • Assistant Stage Manager
  • Costumer

MUSIC DIRECTOR/PIT DIRECTOR

The music director/pit director works with and teaches vocal parts to an intergenerational cast with a broad range of vocal abilities and experiences. This individual needs to embrace performers of all ages, both soloists and our intergenerational ensemble. The music director should be attuned to what is happening in rehearsals, observing what is happening how it impacts the musical aspect of the shows. This position could be filled by one person or, if there is interest and qualified individuals, to split the position into music director (vocal) and pit director.

General Production Team Member Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly production meetings (scheduled based on availability)
  • Communicate with production team members via email and in person
  • Willingness to adapt to changing needs throughout rehearsal process

Music Director Responsibilities

  • Meets with director and choreographer to understand director’s vision of the show (including determining cuts, voicings, solos, tempos, etc.)
  • Creates music recordings for choreographer which coordinates with the musical score prior to first rehearsal
  • Creates music tracks to assist vocalists with learning parts (as needed)
  • Assists in auditions and casting
  • Teaches and rehearses all musical numbers with soloists and ensemble, working with cast of all ages and musical abilities and experiences
  • Holds any additional rehearsals (within reason) to accomplish learning of music Orchestra Pit Conductor Responsibilities
  • Recruits necessary instrumentalists
  • Distributes orchestra parts to players before orchestra rehearsals begin
  • Rehearses pit orchestra before combined rehearsals with cast
  • Communicates all show information with orchestra
  • Assists with arrangement/set up of orchestra pit for performances (with assistance of volunteers)
  • Directs the performances
  • Maintains a spreadsheet of instrumentalists
  • Collect all rented orchestra parts

 

ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER

The assistant stage manager is a key contributor to the show, assisting the stage manager in executing the many functions of cast management and the technical aspects of the show. We view this role as an opportunity for an individual with skills in organization and people management to learn how Rosetown Playhouse functions with the potential to take on the stage manager role in future productions.

General Production Team Member Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly production meetings (scheduled based on availability)
  • Communicate with production team members via email and in person
  • Willingness to adapt to changing needs throughout rehearsal process
  • Assist stage manager in their tasks

Auditions & Rehearsal Responsibilities

  • Attend required rehearsals (approximately ¾ of rehearsals), all tech week rehearsals, and all performances
  • Assist SM with the compilation of cast materials
  • Assist with auditions
  • Assist with rehearsal set-up and clean-up
  • Assist with rehearsals; this includes blocking notes/notetaking or helping cast management during all-cast rehearsals. This includes helping youth cast members get the most out of the rehearsal process.
  • Help keep cast members on track at rehearsals in positive and effective ways

Performance Responsibilities

  • In charge of props for rehearsals and performances, including creating props lists and supervising packing/setting up of props each night
  • Assist with move to Como on the morning of July 12; attends rehearsal afternoon of July 12
  • Assist with set-up and tear down of all performances
  • Work all performances
  • Contribute to positive attitude at rehearsals and performances

 

COSTUMER

The choreographer is responsible for the artistic costuming vision of the show. This person has the unique opportunity of using existing inventory, creating new pieces, and helping cast members find some basic pieces for their costume.

General Production Team Member Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly production meetings (scheduled based on availability)
  • Communicate with production team members via email and in person
  • Willingness to adapt to changing needs throughout rehearsal process

Costumer Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with the director to create costume vision for the show.
  • Uses RTP costume inventory when possible, keeping record of where the costumes are stored.
  • Works with volunteers to build costumes and alter costumes.
  • Communicates with cast about their costume responsibilities (in written and verbal form), assists with acquiring items if needed, and checks all cast members for these items by the deadline on production calendar.
  • Assists by assembling necessary costumes for publicity photos early in rehearsal process.
  • Keeps record of who costumes are assigned to.
  • Attends dress rehearsals to make adjustments and repairs/alterations as needed and is available for repair during the run.
  • Collects and checks in all costumes at end of run, coordinates volunteers for washing/cleaning (in collaboration with production manager), and returns all costumes to their original storage location.
  • Turns in a list of any new costumes built for this show and leaves them on the rack to be added to the inventory.
