In early 2018, SAFD-Certified Teacher Mike Lubke is offering comprehensive multi-week courses in stage combat focused on unarmed, and theatrical Singlesword.
Unarmed - This course will cover how to handle any of a number of scenarios you might find yourself in onstage, whether it's a simple slap or pratfall, to a strangulation in a gritty contemporary drama, or a high-octane Jason Bourne-style action fight scene. Onstage, an actor doesn't get the luxury of stunt double. Learn how to handle yourself and get the confidence you need to really perform without worrying about a technique you just learned briefly during the rehearsal process. Come learn the foundational techniques we can use to keep ourselves and our scene partners safe while we tell thrilling and dramatically effective stories.
Singlesword - Come channel your inner swashbuckler and learn how to perform fights like those featured in Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean, Zorro, and countless works of Shakespeare. The class is designed to give students all the tools they need to confidently and convincingly perform theatrical violence that is both safe and dramatically effective. No prior experience necessary. Whether you're a performer, choreographer, or just someone who wants to get a bit of a workout on weekends while swinging swords around with style and finesse, this class is for you.
These courses culminate with a public performance showcase with students getting the option to be adjudicated for a Skills Proficiency Test. The test process gives students the opportunity to perform a fight within a scene for an excited audience and receive feedback from one of the SAFD Fight Masters, a group of professional choreographers with decades of experience. It is a rare thing in the arts to be able to have your work constructively critiqued and validated against a national standard of quality, but that is the foundation of the SPT process.
