SteppingStone Theatre is looking for 4-7 qualified individuals who have interest and experience in youth work to join our team as Classroom Assistants during the upcoming Summer Camp season. Previous youth work required. Open to anyone 18+. Preference given to candidates who have interest in the Performing Arts and/or those who have completed at least one semester of postsecondary coursework. Art making experiences with SteppingStone are rich, sometimes messy, collaborative processes from the first name game through the final sharing for family and friends. Our classes, staffed by professional Teaching Artists and supported by Classroom Assistants, create space for youth to explore theatrical skill-sets while developing a strong sense of community and belonging. We welcome students of all skill and ability levels from Ages 3-18.
Over the course of a year, SteppingStone will reach approximately 40,000 youth and their families through 5 Main Stage Productions. We’ll offer approximately 150 unique class opportunities to 1,500 students in our building and reach an additional 2,000 students with 30+ Workshops & Residencies held throughout the east metro in conjunction with our Community Partners. SUMMER AT STEPPINGSTONE
Summer Camp is the busiest time of year at SteppingStone Theatre! This year, in addition to our Main Stage production of Junie B. Jones the Musical, SteppingStone will offer 114 unique class opportunities for students ages 3-18, held on-site, with 8+ Community Partnerships & Collaborations held throughout the east metro. Our typically small office staff expands to include 30+ Teaching Artists and Summer Staff members. There’s a fantastically positive energy to the hum, hustle, and bustle of the whole operation.
Be a part of an incredible summer program which provides hands-on learning experience in theatre arts-based youth work. Assist our Teaching Artists with classroom activity facilitation, classroom management, student supervision, and more. This position is best suited for individuals who enjoy working directly with preschool and elementary-aged students in an active and fast-paced environment in which tasks vary from day to day & week to week. Receive training, support, and mentorship throughout the summer. Directly apply what you’ve learned through trainings and mentorship to your work in the classroom. Walk away from this program with a greater understanding and ability to work with youth ages 3-18. In addition to spending time with students & teachers in the classroom, Classroom Assistants will be delegated some administrative/office responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
- Work all hours Monday-Friday between 8:00am-4:30pm (40 hours/week).
- Learn from, and develop connections with, top Teaching Artists and Arts Administrators in the Twin Cities.
- Develop strong relationships with students. Act as their advocate, confidant, information resource, and role model.
- Help create a classroom environment in which all students feel a sense of community, creativity, and agency.
- Support Teaching Artists with classroom management, student participation, and activity facilitation.
- Lead morning check-in, class-to-class transitions, lunch & recess supervision, and afternoon check-out.
- Communicate classroom needs including behaviors, illness, injury, emergency, or teacher requests.
- Occasionally perform administrative duties including data entry, emailing, drafting documents, scheduling, etc.
- Ideally suited for college students or recent college graduates with a background in performing arts, child development, education, administration, or related field.
- Verifiable employment or volunteer work with youth, in a group size of 10-20 students, ages 3-18.
- A basic understanding of youth Best Practices and safety procedures.
- Excellent understanding of customer service.
- Reliable transportation to and from St. Paul (bus, bike, car, carpool…)
- A working phone and email which is checked regularly.
- Ability to exert a high-level of energy, sit, stand, bend, twist, lift, walk, and run for 8 hours each day.
- Ability to memorize and keep track of information including dates, times, locations, student information, and class information.
- Extremely proactive in taking-on responsibility.
- A natural “helper” with the instinct to support however necessary without being asked or directed.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong awareness for the safety, privacy, and wellbeing of students.
- A good sense of humor with the ability to take things in stride and be flexible.
In order to be considered, candidates should have no major conflicts June 10-August 16 between the hours of 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday. There will be no work requirements on weekends, in the evenings, or during the week of July 1-5. Candidates must be able to commit to at least 7 of the 9 weeks of programming. This position requires a full-time (40 hour) commitment during the weeks you are scheduled, but you will not be scheduled all weeks. Most Classroom Assistants can expect to work a total of 6-8 weeks.
