Theater Mu Seeks Marketing & Communications Director

Status: Full-time, Salary employee

Schedule: Flexible, primarily daytime, with some evenings and weekends required

Start time frame: October 2021

Compensation: $62,000-$67,000 annually, includes full health insurance coverage. Negotiable. Salary will be determined by what best fits your skills and experience.

 

JOB OVERVIEW

The Marketing & Communications Director oversees the organization’s external communication channels and marketing efforts of productions and programs, is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with the press, media, designers, and photographers, and manages the brand and voice of Theater Mu. This 40-hour per week position will report to the Managing Director.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Theater Mu was founded in 1992 as a theater company dedicated to bringing Asian American voices to the stage in the Twin Cities, and remains Minnesota’s only pan-Asian performing arts organization growing into one of the largest Asian American performing arts companies in the United States. Through performance and community outreach, Mu provides an unparalleled resource for Asian American artists, introduces Asian American stories and issues to audiences of all backgrounds, and gives Asian Americans of all ages and ethnicities a place to connect and belong. Mu has also helped to develop and support the work of local and national playwrights, actors, directors, and musicians by premiering many new works, fostering a new generation of Asian American artists, and bringing Asian American voices to Twin Cities audiences.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRODUCTION (40% of time)

  • Coordinate with the Office Manager to manage ticket inventory and ensure a seamless and pleasant ticket purchasing experience. 

  • Draft and manage the delivery of purchase confirmation emails, performance reminder emails, and post-show emails. 

  • Strategize, budget, and execute production marketing campaigns, including the creation of direct mailers, marketing emails, as well as print, digital, TV, radio, and social media advertisements.

  • Coordinate marketing swaps with other theater companies.

  • Collaborate with the artistic team of each production, act as the creative director of photoshoots for promotional materials.

  • Coordinate production photography and videography.

  • Invite reviewers and theater writers to each production and utilize their reviews to bolster marketing efforts. 

  • Create production programs, which include collecting company headshots and bios, director’s notes, and necessary acknowledgments.

  • Collect necessary data and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing campaigns in order to adjust as needed. 

BRANDING, DESIGN, DIGITAL (25% of time)

  • Create and manage all visuals and copy for website, social media, emails, direct mailings, advertisements, programs, flyers, and all other organizational materials. 

  • Manage Theater Mu’s social media platforms, retaining a clear voice and consistent plan while seeking out and embracing new social media updates and trends.

  • Maintain and edit Theater Mu’s website, public ticketing site, Google Business, and Google AdWords as needed.

  • Provide branded materials and effectively communicate with partners and collaborators to ensure Theater Mu is appropriately represented.

  • Collect, track, and analyze digital data and adjust strategies accordingly.

COMMUNICATIONS & PRESS/MEDIA RELATIONS (15% of time)

  • Cultivate and maintain both local and national press and media relationships.

  • Draft and send press releases of each production, as well as pertinent events and news to the media in order to pitch feature stories. 

  • Arrange interviews and public appearances, and accompany personnel when necessary.

  • Provide media training and strategy, including a brief of the interviewer and publication, adapting to the medium, and talking points.

  • Coordinate with the Development Director and Programs Manager to schedule communications calendar. 

  • Strategize and implement crisis communications when necessary.

AUDIENCE RELATIONS (10% of time)

  • Coordinate with the Office Manager to ensure proper box office procedures at each venue Theater Mu performs at. 

  • Set up the lobby at each venue to best reflect Theater Mu’s brand and to work in the best interest of our patrons. 

  • Create or oversee the creation of lobby displays, posters, and dramaturgical materials. 

  • Seek out and implement ways to effectively collect qualitative and quantitative patron data.

OTHER DUTIES (10% of time)

  • Attend and be a representative of Theater Mu at events related to the organization’s mission.

  • Other intermittent tasks such as box office support, answering the phone, and setting up events as needed to support the organization.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Passionate about Theater Mu’s mission and values.

  • Collaborative team player that is highly motivated and has a self-starter mentality.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to both maintain a consistent voice and tailor messages to segmented audiences.

  • It is not necessary to be a designer; however, it is important to have a strong design sense and be able to manage projects involving freelance designers and artists. A high level of artistry, understanding of layout design, and brand consistency will be expected.

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and budgeting skills.

  • Experience with PatronManager or Salesforce, Adobe Creative Suite, Squarespace, Google Adwords, Facebook Business Manager, and/or Emma email.

  • At least three years of experience in marketing and communications or related field. 

  • Ability to clearly articulate the importance and impact of Theater Mu as both an arts and social justice organization.

  • Strong administrative and computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours when needed, including evenings and weekends as the production calendar dictates.

  • Strong knowledge of and experience with the Asian American community in Minnesota.
