Southern names new theater program director

News

Theater director Jon Ferguson has been named the theater programming director at the Southern Theater – one of three new artistic positions that have been created since founding artistic director Jeff Bartlett’s departure.

What? you ask because you’ve been living under a rock for the last four months, Jeff Bartlett isn’t the Artistic Director of the Southern anymore? If you really don't know and you're curious, go ask a dancer friend to fill you in on the 2008 Southern Theater Controversy. If you don’t have a dancer friend, you make a dancer friend by hanging out at the Southern where dancers have felt at home for many years under Jeff Bartlett's Artistic Direction. Whether or not that will remain the case is, I guess, one of the big unanswered questions right now.

Regardless, starting in November, Jon Ferguson, along with the music and dance program directors who have yet to be named, will be responsible for finding the work that the Southern will produce in the future. According to Kate Nordstrom, Southern’s communications and marketing director, the curatorial process will remain, for now, largely as it was under Jeff, with artistic director(s) seeking out the work they feel is the best fit for the space. In other words, for the moment, if you’re interested in working at the Southern, schmooze Jon Ferguson.
