Northern Light Opera Company is seeking an experienced youth theater director/teaching artist to lead the first week of the NLOKids summer theater camp, June 22 - 25th. 

NLOKids is an ongoing partnership between Northern Light Opera Company and the Pine Point School in White Earth with the goal of supporting kids aged 8-13 in the creation of their own original theater work. For over 10 years, this program has provided unique performing arts opportunities for children from both the White Earth and Park Rapids communities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as director for a group of kids aged 8-13 in a 4-day ‘Week 1’ of theater camp
  • Establishing a healthy working community through theater games
  • Guiding students in the creation of a story outline for an original theater work
  • Helping flesh out the story outline through devising, improvisation, and movement
  • Creating a draft of a script to be used for performance
  • Supervising activities and working with assistant directors
  • Coordinating with the production team, which will spend the next 2 weeks staging and creating design & music for the script

Ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Experience working with youth aged 8-13 in theater
  • Experience in devising, or playwriting
  • A passion for supporting and uplifting the creative voices of young actors across a broad spectrum of theatrical experience
  • A positive, adaptable attitude
  • An ability to listen and encourage all voices in the collaborative process

Commitment:

  • The NLOKids program takes place on-site at the Pine Point School in White Earth, near Park Rapids, MN
  • Camp runs Monday-Thursday, 9:30a-1:30p, with 45-minute breaks for lunch and recess.
  • School bus transportation to Pine Point from Park Rapids is available leaving at 9am, and returning at 2pm. 
  • Support staff includes a student director and a para. 

Compensation

  • Payment for the 4 days (June 22-25) is $1000.00
  • housing in Park Rapids, MN
  • Travel to and from Park Rapids, MN (gas or Amtrak tickets)
