Emigrés and Mentors: January 22nd, 2017

Join us on January 22 for The Musical Offering's second concert of its 46th season. The afternoon's program features our woodwind players in works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Elsa Barraine, François Devienne, and André Caplet, who all found in Paris a cosmopolitan center for learning and creating.

This concert presents a very special opportunity for TMO: performing a newly rediscovered work. André Caplet, a friend of and orchestrator for Claude Debussy, wrote his Quintet for Piano and Winds in 1898. It had been lost to modern audiences until John Wilcox found the composition and published the work. John will be at the performance during intermission to share his experience and to answer questions about what it is like to uncover a piece of music, believed to be lost, more than a century after composition and to see it through to publication and its first performance since re-discovery.

The program opens with Mozart's flute quintet, composed during his pilgrimage to France. Before closing with Caplet, we will also perform an early twentieth century work by Elsa Barraine, only the fourth woman to win the coveted composition prize the Prix de Rome, and a quartet for bassoon and string trio composed by François Devienne, a parisian flautist and contemporary of Mozart. It is sure to be an exciting cosmopolitan concert.

GETTING THERE AND PARKING: Sundin Music Hall is located at 1531 Hewitt Avenue on the campus of Hamline University in Saint Paul. Free parking is available one half-block east and NiceRide bikes are available nearby. The Hamline campus is a stop on the new A Line rapid bus route, and is located just blocks north of the Metro Transit Green Line. The hall features curbless entry feet from the door and is accessible for all who wish to hear our music.
