Painting something (including wood) to look like wood is something every painter will be asked to do - a lot. In this practical class, local Scenic Artists Angelique Powers and Ursula Bowden will share their extensive toolkits of tips and tricks to make this incredibly important skill easy, fast and effective.

Participants will start by working up samples for different styles of faux wood finishes and getting some good practice with that. On the second day, participants will dig a little deeper and focus on some basic Trompe L’oiel skills for highlight and shadow to give that extra little bit that makes all the difference.

Especially relevant in a town of predominantly low- to medium-budget shops, our instructors will also discuss important questions like where to buy materials affordably; how to create expensive effects with cheaper paints and when expensive specialized products are the best overall choice.

All materials will be provided; please dress appropriately for painting: work clothes and shoes that can get dirty and paint-stained, possibly a head covering to keep paint out of your hair.

Normally a $180 cost (Instructors, space rental, materials, insurance), generous funding from the MN State Arts Board via the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment allows us to present this at $80. Scholarships are available- Contact Laura at [email protected] to apply.
