On Sneetch Beach, there’s a line in the sand—Star Bellies on one side, Plain Bellies on the other.  That’s the way it is, was, and will be.  At least until the sneaky and greedy Sylvester Monkey McBean comes to town with his Star On machine.  Suddenly, the difference between the haves and the have nots—those with stars and those without—isn’t so clear. What will the Sneetches do now? In this rousing and inventive musical adaptation of Dr. Seuss's powerful parable about the surface things that divide us, it will take a courageous friendship between an unlikely pair of Sneetches to find the answers.

This work is supported by a Theatre Commissioning and Production Initiative grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

This production was commissioned, developed, and originally produced through Children’s Theatre Company’s Threshold new play development lab in Minneapolis, MN.

Arnold Wesker’s 1959 slice-of-life drama draws battle lines behind the scenes in a restaurant, revealing how as societies operate with and against each other by pitting the cooks against the waiters.

A Lutheran take on the classical "hero" journey, RISE UP, O MEN is the story of men (and women) who become larger than themselves; it's the story of a group of farmers and John Deere dealers, and church basement ladies, who rise to the requirement of heroism in order to help their community and its future. RISE UP, O MEN is a new musical featuring the men of the church and your favorite church basement Ladies who serve them. The year is 1964, in the basement kitchen of the Lutheran Church in rural Minnesota. As these hard-working farmers discuss their scrap lumber piles and their tractors and preparations for the Centennial Celebration, they unintentionally disrupt the order of the kitchen...but that's what happens when you let the roosters in the hen house.

Playwright Sidney Bruhl is struggling to overcome a dry spell and a string of failures when a student in his writing seminar turns in a script that he knows would be a surefire hit on Broadway. Prepared to do anything it takes to get that script, he invites the student to his home — and from that point on, the suspense mounts steadily, with twists and turns that build to the final, startling moments of the play. “Two-thirds a thriller, one-third a devilishly clever comedy…”  –Cue Magazine

This unique Northern Starz Children's Theatre event will be much more than a play. We have partnered up with The White Bear Center for the Arts, Temple Israel, Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas “Transfer of Memory”, Sabes JCC (Jewish Community Center) and playwright Celeste Raspanti, to bring our young cast the ability to not just perform, but to truly learn the history behind events surrounding the holocaust and the hope that survived.

Story and Background
Over 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, and only about one hundred were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of WWII. These few then went back to the scattered pieces of their lives, their homes and their families. Raja lived through it all at Terezin, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little reason for hope.  This play is her story. It is history as much as any play can be history, showing the best and the worst of which the human heart is capable.

The Playwright, Celeste Raspanti
A playwright, former nun, and retired college professor, Celeste Raspanti is known for having published and produced several plays. Her special interest in the Holocaust, as well as her interest in the stories from the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, led to her writing I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Her other plays on this topic include No Fading Star and The Terezin Promise. Raspanti’s work has been acclaimed for its firsthand information garnered from visits, oral histories, and interviews with concentration camp survivors. Today, Raspanti lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

This sidesplitting, uplifting peek into the lives of the rural Norwegian Lutherans who audiences first fell in love with in 2005 is the sixth chapter of the story begun in the original Church Basement Ladies. In Rise Up O Men, series familiars Mrs. Mavis Gilmerson, Mrs. Vivian Snustad, and Mrs. Karin Engleson are busy with preparations for the church’s 1964 Centennial Celebration, and the menfolk of the parish have their own problems to solve. Karin’s husband Elroy, farmer Carl and Great War vet Arlo are joined in brotherhood by series staple Pastor E.L. Gunderson. Their camaraderie unites them as they deal with furnace salesmen, looming retirement, rival Protestant denominations, the Pastor’s bad jokes, and Arlene’s even-worse cooking.

Florida, 1929: a Cuban-American family eagerly awaits the arrival of a new lector to read aloud to their cigar factory workers. When he introduces them to the classic Anna Karenina, a hot and humid Tampa factory starts to mirror the scandalous Russian aristocracy of Tolstoy’s classic. Love, revenge, passion, and tragedy abound in this award-winning drama.

Produced in partnership with Joel Sass’ Oddfellows Collective. Conceived, written, designed and directed by Joel Sass. Featuring performer Kimberly Richardson. Including Noah Sommers Haas(performer and assistant director), Rick Miller(Performer), Ariane Mass(Performer), Sean Healey (sound), Michael Murnane (lighting), and Salima Seale (stage manager).

The Red Shoes takes its title from a classic Hans Christian Anderson story of a young girl and a pair of red shoes, and thrillingly re-imagines it as a retro-urban fairytale.

The heroine of this adventure is more of a mouse than a warrior, hiding in a tiny apartment in the middle of the Big City, fearful of venturing out, or of letting anyone (or anything) in. But she’s not alone.

Eventually a pair of haunted red shoes is delivered to her doorstep, and they propel our heroine into a harrowing film noir adventure through the labyrinths and spiral staircases of her own mind, where she must face down her fears of what lurks in the subway tunnel, and discover what fate has in store for her up on the rooftop!

Equally humorous and hair-raising, The Red Shoes draws inspiration and influences from vintage detective novels, black and white film noir movies of the 1930s and ’40s, and case studies of amnesia and multiple personality. The inventive use of manipulated objects, dolls, and masks provide a dream-like quality to the unfolding adventure.

EDNA PONTELLIER HAS ZERO EFFS LEFT TO GIVE. Nothing is really wrong, at all, except for the inconvenient fact that she's slowly dying inside. Here we have one woman's struggle to become her most authentic self, amidst a society unwilling to see her for who she is. Music, waves, and sexual tension thick as the humid New Orleans air combine to tell this hilarious, heartbreaking, and beautiful story. Adapted freely from Kate Chopin's landmark feminist novel.

“[THE AWAKENING] is an amazing show: it had me on the edge of my seat, and on multiple occasions wanting to jump out of it with cheers.” (Critic Jay Gabler, review of the 2010 production)

Originally produced in 2010, Savage Umbrella dives back into Chopin's vibrant world to reimagine this classic tale for it's 10th anniversary season!
